Filtering drums

I was wondering how you could filter drums over a period of time? I have a track where I want the higher frequencies to be filtered out and to bring them in a slow and controlled manner but I have no idea how. This is using Cubase SX as a host.
Thank you for help!

Thanks for the response. I''m afraid that I don't know what automation is
I do know what a low pass fliter is as a concept, and in the context of a synth but I don't know how one would work in this situation? would it be a effect? would it be built into Cubase?
Thanks for the help

In Cubase you can draw a curve over time that represents turning a knob in a plugin or in the mixer. Like, you have different volumes for one track over the course of a song. Or different filter settings.Equilibrium wrote:Thanks for the response. I''m afraid that I don't know what automation is![]()
Excuse my shameless self promotion, but there are a couple of new Filterscape demo songs that show Filterscape filtering drums (among other stuff): http://www.filterscape.com

I had no idea of that, I feel quite ignorant. I'll investigate this further. I take it you could do this with panning also then?
Thanks for the response. Any more info would be great also.

Yes, you can also do panning.Equilibrium wrote:I had no idea of that, I feel quite ignorant. I'll investigate this further. I take it you could do this with panning also then?

This is what DAWs like Cubase, Logic and ProTools are all about. You don't just drag audio regions around or Midi data (like trackers or sequencers), you also record/edit/control most if not any aspect of mixing or sonic manipulation on the time line.

Ok I've played about with FX channels for the last few days now, I'm still stuck though. What effect could I send my track to that would act as an amplitute filter (?). Is there something built into cubase that would work, I've tried mucking about with limiters and stuff but I'm not very sure that I've got the right end of the stick here.
Thank you for being tollerant of my ineptitude!

do you mean an amplitude-following filter...?Equilibrium wrote:would act as an amplitute filter (?).
because a mute switch would be an amplitude-filter
maybe check minion VST, it does autofilter effects, including an Envelope Follower. and its free too

sorry, I was quite unclear in my post. I ment it for turning down or up the volume in a controled way over a period of time. I also was looking for the same thing in a low pass filter, a way of controling it over a period of time.shamann wrote:Amplitude filter? You mean like turning down the volume?
Thanks

Ok great I've tried out the programs and they are cool, however I've only got half way there ( I can now low pass an high pass ect...) and I think my loose use of language and terminology has perhaps made me unclear. One of the things I was after was something, or some way to use an FX channel to low/highten the voulme of a track. After using the programs mentioned here, I'm guessing there not built to do that.
Perhaps there is something in Cubase itself that allows what I presume must be a simple tast?
Thanks
