I think you need 5.2 or higher for the app to install on XP. And for that, you'd need an updated dongle. I think you're out of luck...

I have and it just doesn't feel the same, I can't really explain it...but it is now as smooth for want of a better word. I have been trying on and off for about a week now. Is it just me

You can still download some versions of Logic here: http://www.emagic.de/support/download/index.php?lang=EN
But you'll still need a compatible dongle. Check out eBay for some cheap deals on legit copies of Logic 5.
Definitely stick with it if you're comfy with it. Once you go Logic, etc.
