ok, follow me here for a second....so first i bought this hardware filter....

basically a 3-channel analog filter with some cool tricks up it's sleeve.
now moving on.... Cubase SX3 has this new VSTfx plugin for 'external hardware effects'. You can setup an external processor, the VST plugin will 'ping' a signal through the processor to determine the latency for PDC, and then you can choose the VST plugin to use your external hardware just like a plugin....cool, but it gets even better.....
this filter's knobs and buttons all send and receive midi. I've been playing with it for a few days, and i'm absolutely AMAZED how I can now use this external hardware processor in the EXACT same manner i use my software plugins. I can record and edit automation, it follows me on playback. I pick it and use it just like my other software plugins.
SERIOUSLY, WOW
it feels like the 'big shiny legend' of a 'virtual studio' and 'seamless integration of software and hardware' is finally a reality.
I know it's supposed to be the other way around....plugins acting like a hardware paradigm.
But i've been stuck in 'software only' for so long, that the ability to record and playback automation on a HARDWARE device, and have it integrated right into Cubase just like my software plugins....it's just like, WOW THIS IS TEH OWN3Z
thanks steinberg for your 'external hardware' vst plugin, and thanks AKAI for a fully midi-specced analog filter. i'm one happy kid
