Steaming a .ape file from server"?"

Does anyone know why some compressed audio file formats like .ape do not stream into it`s associated file player,(winamp),from a server and begin to play as a .mp3 will in say...media player?
If I compress an audio file to a .ape file...winamp will play it in that format.
But if I treat it as I do a .mp3,and store it at my ftp, load the link into internet explorer and execute...the "open or save"window appears.
If I choose to open it...it ofcoarse streams to my temp internet files folder...then opens the winamp and plays!
Is there a setting in explorer so that it will recognize it and stream it to the winamp directly?
Thanx...hope I havent caused any headaches. : )

well...i`m using .ape at this time because it compresses a .wav file down to at least 45% of it`s original size and winamp plays it as is.
Also,as i`ve read in the "monkey audio" site,it compresses as a "lossless" format...unlike .mp3.
It will uncompress back to a .wav without any data loss...and sounds to me so far,as if the compressed file plays back in winamp as crisp and dynamic as the original .wav file...but i`m not sure if it`s the same.
I guess .ogg is a good compression choice as well...but i`m just trying .ape at this moment.
For audio,I can stream .wma and .mp3,but they are the only types i`ve streamed and I was wondering why others will not.

It's not really a good answer, but have you thought about switching from IE to Firefox? Firefox lets you specify the default action for various file types (presumably .ape as well).
I've found Firefox superior to IE in several other ways too.

Hi Barnadine.
Wow...switching bowsers...hmmm...that`s a spooky thought for me.hehe.
Like going to "mac" from pc...at least for me that is.
Never had a look at another browser...how well did firefox work into the music application,(DAW),part of the pc Barnadine?
Not really sure if IE is the reason that some files are not directed to its associated player .exe.
I`m just curious where the decisions for all this made.

Yeah, these things can be traumatic.
I haven't had any problem with interference between Firefox and DAW stuff. The whole switch-over was quick and painless.
IE no doubt has settings buried deep within that someone will know about. In Firefox these settings are far more transparent.
I sound like a Firefox ad-man, don't I?
