I know that I am super late here but....
I just got turned onto the "aja" record and man...WOW....what a nice album.
some really great musicianship on that record....not to mention the production is superb.

Isn't there 2 version of it?, the second version they did themselves?

The earlier stuff is well worth checking out too. I still get butterflys in my stomach when I listen to Pretzel Logic (takes me right back to a very emotional time).

Derek.

My favorites records have always been their first 3 (when they were still a bit more like a "real" band)
THey are is good as it gets, IMHO

yeah, I can't wait to check out their other stuff.
IMO you just don't hear musicians like that it todays pop/rock music.
also makes you want to toss all your limiters in the recycle bin....hehe
long live dynamics!

Be sure to check out Donald Fagen’s solo albums, too. “The Nightfly” is brilliant and “Kamakiriad” is pretty good, too. Walter Becker also made a solo album called “11 Tracks of Whack”. I think both of them were involved in all three projects so I tend to see them all as Steely Dan albums (though it takes a while to get used to Becker singing instead of Fagen).

Never have liked Steely Dan -- the whole collegiate in-joke thing leaves me cold, and they don't have enough variety of sound to satisfy me. But for some reason I find "Dr. Wu" interesting to listen to. Once in a rare while only. Go figure.

I never liked their albums much, nor their radio hits for the most part -- but they are great performers. They put on some good concerts. Not much spectacle, but terriffic musicianship. Worth seeing, on the order of say, seeing Santana or Crosby Stills & Nash, not a *must see* on the order of the Rolling Stones or the Grateful Dead.
Too late for most of that anyway, but I am really glad I saw them in concert a few times. For me, a musical group is defined by their live experience.

Aha -- radio hits. I 'spect you've hit on the big reason I don't care for them. Must give their less-heard stuff a try some day. Anything you'd recommend to give an impression of their concert playing?

Great band. I've been listening a lot to the outtakes from Gaucho and they are just as good as the songs that made it on the album!

uff...
I really like Two Against Nature, too. Everything Must Go is boring though. Sophisticated but really boring.
