ok , I'll bring this up again since I amongst others are having some issues in this regard .

As i have a dual-CPU system i can nicely show the hit it takes when heavy gui useage is impacting on the cpu without crashing the system or too quickly halting it .

Here is a test I done with a project with average amount of elements , like some audio tracks a few inserts and some VSTi (BTW: running completely on one CPU , so I'm quite sure the overhead that would normally be added by the task of scheduling between two or more processors in a multi-cpu environment can be left neglected and doesn't play a role into it) .

The graphic below show the cpu load (left: CPU 1, right CPU 2) when

a) first half:
having a project playing back (seq window maximized)
b) second half:
still playing back and having a plugin gui opened and moving it around the screen (it eventually spiked at some point visible near the end of the timeline, which caused my system to freeze)

What one can see , is that it makes a MAJOR impact on cpu load and the question is if this is solvable or am I only trying to hunt a ghost ?

In a similar vein , wasn't there an option earlier that if the display settings are set to "don't show content of window when moving" it only shows the outline of moved windows ?
It doesn't work anymore , but it was a BIGTIME cpu saver !

Post

can you try some other applications for comparison?

Post

good point , i'll do .

Post

Even better...can you create a benchmark file that others can try on their systems for comparison?

Eh, that's just Windows' crappy GDI.. Try doing it with your web browser window, or any window.

that's what i was trying to say ;-) but maybe there is really some space for optimizations ...

Uhm. I only move the outline of the windows I drag (after advice from some how-to-optimize-for-audio site), so moving shit around doesn't even register in the performance plot...

Does this mean it works for you in eXT as well (i.e. content of moved windows - plugin guis - is not displayed , but only the outline) ?

It works in the rest of XP but not in eXT here
This would solve 99% of my gripes at the moment .

Post

Also - I'll try to build this test setup for anyone interested in a comparison .

Post

this also depends on the used graphics-card ...

Post

good that you mention it , for my part:

Geforce 4 Ti 4400 (AGP), 128 MB with 77.72 drivers , in dual display mode with eXT used on the primary only .

Yes. I tried it an extra time before I posted this.
When I move plugin guis, I only see the outline until I let go of the mouse button. And I can't see any evidence of added CPU strain at all.

You're obviously not using the latest beta (i just tried the last four or five versions including final and there it works) ?
In the latest beta it doesn't work anymore .
Or can you proove me wrong ?
I know , if this is switched on, the moving of guis is a non-cpu-issue at all anymore ;)

jorgen , please fix if possible !

this is a windows-setting (under display-properties -> effects). should be called "show content when dragging windows" or so ...

Post

I have it disabled , otherwise I wouldn't have written that it works in the previous versions ;)
