I've been researching the subject on and off for about a year, and found a few recordings here and there, but information on it is really scarce.

Where would I be able to learn about this music (besides Japan)? Are there any books out that would help? What composers and pieces of music should I look into? Also, are there any books out that would teach the theory and philosophies behind Japanese classical?

Check the conspiracy thread. The Secret Order of the Koto don't want you to know. Don't look here:

Thanks, these'll help.
I read that the theory behind Japanese music is the same as Chinese music theory. Is this true or did the Japanese change it somewhat?

EMusic.com has quite a few traditional Japanese artists/albums. You can join and get 50 free mp3's and cancelling actually works. I joined a long time ago, cancelled immediately, and it was a smooth cancellation. However, I did return for a lasting membership and have acquired more ethnic music now than I even have time to listen to.

I have a friend who is a very rocking guitar player.
Anyway, once he told me about a koto phase he went through. He spend a LOT of time making an instrument, and then when he played it, he went so far as to do traditional clothes and makeup to play and medidtated before he recorded it.
Keep in mind this guy is anything but Japanese.
