Hey all. I'd like to know what everyone's PC specs are and how they rate their system for softsynth+MIDI work. I plan to upgrade my main studio PC soon but I'm not looking for any top-of-the-line CPU's.

Anyway, mine is:

Main studio PC: Pentium 4, 1.4 Ghz, 640 Mb RAM, dedicated audio harddisk (80 Gb 7200rpm). It's a bit old now, so only runs a few instances of softsynths+fx.

Compaq Presario Laptop: Athlon XP 2400+, 1 Gb RAM, 80 Gb 5400rpm harddisk. Used mainly for schoolwork but does a good job with a softsynth studio. Can handle around 12-16 synths plus many fx.

Pentium Pro 166Mhz, 16MB Ram, 880 MB Hard drive, Diamond S3 video. I can run one instance of Rubberduck as long as I dont go crazy.

Oh you mean my current PC. Well here it is:
Athlon 64 3700+ Sandiego
2 GB RAM
500 GB of hard drive space (200+200+100)
Ati Radeon x300(cheap and fanless)gfx

Can run just about anything I want and then some. With Sonar I can Freeze anything that gets out of control. But I can run 4-5 Mtrons, Reason3, a few dimensions, and a Kjaerhus GPP on every channel. Then add about 20 tracks of audio and still only be at about 50% CPU.

thank god for technology advancements

this would be much better as a poll with various better than / worse than voting options. reading through lots of specs is dull

Crap! You kids make me feel OLD! I'm not far from S.A.P's set up, and figure it's doing me fine for now. I'm dreaming about a Toshiba M60... Someday.

AMD 2.5GHz
1GB RAM
some GForce graphics card or other.
120GB HD (7200rpm I think - whatever, it's quick enough that the ashtray won't stay on it.)
Aardvark LX6 soundcard (no aardvarks in it...unfortunately there are no aardvarks at their main office any more either).

Can't do everything, but good enough for me for a few years. It will do quite a few FX, VSTi etc, but I just made it a habit ages ago to render plenty of stuff - no point having a PC DAW if I were to run everything live - may as well get out all of my h/w to do that. One of the main benefits of PCs is that they let you record loads of audio - silly not to use that facility IMO. I could still make do with my old AMD 1.1GHz if I had to, but it doesn't have any glowing lights on it :? ...and that's essential to a conducive working environment - that's always been a main gripe of mine - not nearly enough lights on a PC.

:hihi:

Thanks to all so far. I'm thinking about getting an Athlon 64 3000+ Socket 754 with 1 Gig. I know everyone recommends Socket 939 for dual core compatibility and other stuff, but a system like the one I describe would last me for 4 or 5 years, after that, dual cores might just be pretty standard or even a past thing.

I bought my P4, 1.4 Ghz (w/128 Mb RAM) five years ago and it has worked fairly well. I've only upgraded the RAM and harddisk (from 10 Gb to 80 Gb). But now its age is starting to show - some plugs like Cameleon5000 don't even work very well. I need a bit more horsepower to keep up for the next 5 years without any major upgrade.

All my machines are sub 1Ghz. I'd have to say I'm happy for the most part. They do what I want. There are a few plugs I like that could do with more horsepower (Sytrus, Nads, Sophia). My philosiphy is if it runs good on my hardware it will run great on something more modern. If it's crap it might not get any better.

PIV 2.4 GHz, 512 MB RAM

I wish I had a 24 GHz instead.

Ummm...let me see now: P4 3.2Ghz, 2GB RAM, 2x200GB HDD's, Audigy 2 ZS (still don't see the problem with these), X800 XT PE graphics card. I use FL Studio 5.02 and this setup copes v.easily.
