I'd like to add some Lounge / Chill Out music to my collection but don't really know where to start. Who are your favorite artists and what are the best cds to pick up?

Anything by Martin Denny (R.I.P.) or Les Baxter - the undisputed kings of lounge exotica!

Air & zero 7 are a good start , Plaid , Bent , Grantby , Snooze , Two loneswordsmen , Boards of canada , Koordinate of Wonders , Telephon tel aviv , Tycho , U-ziq , Deadly avenger , Blue states.

can't go wrong with any of the above

and theres me too , hit my bliss electronica link and hear for yourself.

You could take a listen to SomaFM's Groove Salad stream and note down the artist whenever you hear something you like.

Other than that I second Zero7 and add Blue States, Omnimotion, Sven van Hees and Bonobo to the list of recommendations.

Being from Vienna, probably one of the world's capitals of electronic lounge music I'll chip in a few locals: Kruder & Dorfmeister's K&D Sessions, Tosca's (which is a Dorfmeister project) Opera. The Peace Orchestra (a Kruder project) discs are probably also worth a try but I sort of never got round to checking them out myself. Vienna Scientists compilations are also quite nice.
Not entirely lounge (but then again is µ-ziq) but very cool are of course all the works by the Sofa Surfers and their members. Also their home label Klein Records has released a very nice compilation called Sincerely Yours (feat. a track by KVRs Moritz Morpheus as well).

This looks like a great start and I'm looking forward to checking out all your suggestions! It seems like a lot of the focus has been on Lounge so far. I don't know my genre categories very well, but if Chill Out is a bit different can you also recommend some that are more Chill than Lounge?

Yes the suggestions i posted would useually be pigeon holed in the 'Downtempo electronica' section but they blend well with the chillout theme.

That's cool. Can you help educate me on the genres? What exactly is the difference between Downtempo, Chill Out, and Lounge?
