I'm thinking of selling my computer but there are important documents on here, like my resume, with personal information. I heard that the data on your harddrive remains on there for a very long time... I heard that you may have to re-install windows about 7 times to really have everything erased...
does anyone know of a program that can truly erase everythying on your hard drive before you sell it?

Man that dirty pic on your drive is... interesting. Is it porn or rather some weird science project documentation? I think that alien dude is kinda groovy.
Just kidding

I can recommend O&O Safeerase. Supports different patterns (2 NSA NISPOM methods, the german BSI method, and a custom one which is more up to date in regards to security considerations, which offers the highest level of security (and takes quite a while).
The tool also has the ability to scrub a drive's free space, or an entire disk.

there is a way of recovering data that has not been saved as well, i once heard. is that true?
I would say that getting a brand new hard drive would do the trick, if you are getting a new one that is. less hassle and no need to transfer everything

I don't think so. Or maybe there's some page file file extractor?Bunnyboy wrote:there is a way of recovering data that has not been saved as well, i once heard. is that true?

Best way to erase a hard drive that you no longer use and you don’t want info to be compromised = Big hammer and Chisel
Smash it to bits imo

Some reknowned norwegian hard disk recovery company has found incriminating data on disks that were penetrated several times and thrown in salt water, so I don't think you're completely safe even with hammer and chisel...Spe3D wrote:Best way to erase a hard drive that you no longer use and you don’t want info to be compromised = Big hammer and Chisel

Those companies' services don't come cheap.Hovmod wrote:Some reknowned norwegian hard disk recovery company has found incriminating data on disks that were penetrated several times and thrown in salt water, so I don't think you're completely safe even with hammer and chisel...
It's much safer to smash the HD than to sell it on unformatted.

I...
Overwrite every bit with a 1 and then a 0, eighteen times.
Take it to my local scrap yard where big Sid runs the electro-magnet over the exposed disk surface for a minimum of six hours.
Then Sid crushes the thing to the size of packet of 10 Embassy (regular not kings).
After a couple more weeks in neat hydrocloric acid I nip to Mordor on my bike and pitch it into Mt Doom.
You can't be too careful. Somebody might want to read your CV.
