is it just me or others have similar experience.
there is some people(especially around me) asking for
where can I get a book for making beats?
is there book for making good certain style or music?
is there book for how to do beat boxing?
how to do arrangement for eletronica music.
(question goes like I like the Prodigy, what book
do I need to make music like them?)
what Harmony book is good for studying how to compose music?
and so on...
I feel they are quite, well... stupid.
in my experience nobody learn how to do beat boxing
from book.
Nobody learn how to compose reading harmony theory book.
(it's helpful but it won't teach you how to compose music)
yet many people around me is asking for
books don't exist.
what are there problem?
do they think everything need to be learn from
a book or from teacher?
I'm just so frustrated.

Most people who call themselves musicians either know nothing about the technical aspects of their passtime or are unwilling to tell (unless they're being paid).
Music is as much craft as art and if you think otherwise you're a deluded, romantic twat and not a musician. Given this, what's wrong with asking for a book?

well, you have a point.
maybe it was just people around me making me
frustrated.
they don't try anything for themself.
it they want to make let's say electronica.
they don't even listen to electronica music and
looking for book first.
I think that's wrong.
I mean, if you want to do electronica, you listen
many great musician in that genre and
you try to learn what they are doing.
then if you want to get in deep or need some knowledge about
sound designing, or synthesis part
then you look for some books.
but these people I know, don't even listen electronica
that much and they are just looking for books to
teach them how to make eletronica from beginning to end.
so that's why I got so frustrated.
maybe I didn't put it well on my first topic.
English isn't my first language.

I think maybe some people probably can't even recognise the melody to Happy Birthday, but like the idea of being a producer with tons of flashy gear, and they think that if they read enough about how to make music, it will actually give them some musical ability

Except that books ARE a really good way to learn music theory. Going through a good music theory textbook will teach you most of the important stuff in regards to it, and using that knowledge to study and learn from other books can really increase your knowledge.Jbravo wrote:I think maybe some people probably can't even recognise the melody to Happy Birthday, but like the idea of being a producer with tons of flashy gear, and they think that if they read enough about how to make music, it will actually give them some musical ability

you can learn theory yes - but it won't give you ability, a good ear or interesting ideas

guys I hate to say this.
but I'm not saying learning from book is bad.
I love reading books and I learned many things from books.
but does anybody here learn how to edit velocity for
for trance groove from a book?
or how to rap from a book?
or how to beat box from a book?
those things, I think you learn from experiment or just you learn by listening to
others do.
but many people around me is asking for such a book to teach them how to
rap, how to beat box, how to edit velocity of midi note to suit paticular genre.

no actually, theory is good - I studied it myself. I just get the impression that some people who post on here just like the idea of being a musician and so demand to know what's the best VST for tarnce, and what chords you need for hard house as if it's just a simple recipe out of a book. I think if you have any musical ability you can use your ears and figure out the basics yourself.nuffink wrote:Can we take it you're of the "I don't need no theory" persuasion".Jbravo wrote:you can learn theory yes - but it won't give you ability, a good ear or interesting ideas
