It sounds a silly question, but in Tracktion 1 how can I able the monitor mode in an audio track to hear what I'm playing while recording ?

Post

This is done on both a per-instrument and 'global' basis. The terminology Tracktion uses is called "end-to-end" because you can hear the signal that enters, gets recorded, goes through the plug-ins, and ends up a the master output. ;)

You don't need to know why it's called end-to-end, though, what you DO need to do is:

1. Click on the icon for your input. In the properties panel that appears at the bottom of the page, make sure "end-to-end" is enabled.

2. In the set of buttons next to the transport, there's a button labeled "e-to-e". Make sure that's also enabled.

That'll sort you out.

Now, remember that some plug-ins will add latency in addition to your soundcard's latency, so you might have to disable some of them to do realtime recording while monitoring effects. Anything that uses FFT (for example, most Elevayta plugs, many BetabugsAudio plugs) will add significant latency.

Thank you very much, now it works !

Another help, please. I've got Kompact inserted as filter and loaded a kit. How can I pan every single sound of this kit ?
I tried to set through "automable parametrs for this track > volume & pan filter" and draw an autoamtion, but the sound doesn't follow the pan movings.
In cubase there's the "read automation" function. Is there something similar in Tracktion ?

thank you again

Heya,

I'm almost primarily an audio guy, so this is getting a bit out of my depth. ;) Do you mean that you want to record the panning of your kit as automation, or that you want each component panned seperately and statically (ie. the panning position stays the same for the whole song)?

For the latter, it's probably largely done (or at least, COULD be largely done) from within Kompakt itself.

If it's the former, then yes, you can record and read automation in pretty much the same way as Cubase, in addition to drawing the automation:

In the transport control section, you'll see 2 smaller "play" and "record" buttons right next to the normal play button. These are for recording and playing back automation. By default, the playback button is enabled so that you can hear automation that's been "drawn". However, if you'd like to record automation, just make sure the small record "A" button is enabled and tweak away!

Not sure if that helps or if that's what you meant.

Note, however, that if you automate just the volume and pan filter, you will be panning the entire range of sounds that originate in this track, ie. everything that comes out of Kompakt will be panned or its volume adjusted.

I want to draw manually the pan assigning to each sound of the kit an individual pan not the entire range of sounds that originate from lompact.

thank you again.very kind !

Try this:

- right-click on the small "a" (for editing automation curves) on the track
- You should see a drop-down menu that includes the one you've already seen (volume & pan filter), but there will ALSO be a single-line entry for Kompakt->
- Click this and you should see a list (I'm betting it'll be huge) for automatable Kompakt parameters. I hope they're labelled well. ;)

I can't remember exactly, so I could be wrong, but I'm not sure you can pan etc in Kompakt - isn't that why Kontakt exists? Kompakt is mostly just a playback engine, yeah?

Could be! Raniel, you might have run up against a limitation of Kompakt, but not being an owner, I can't confirm. If you do NOT get a huge drop down list from the Kompakt-> automation sub-menu, then boogooloo's on the right track.

Lunch, unfortunally I get a huge drop down list with strange labels showing codes numbered from #000 to #511

But I don't know which number refers to pan...[/img]

Unfortunately, that's Native Instruments' fault. ;) Tracktion can only report to you what NI reports to it.

Here's what you do:

1. Fire up a "test" edit so that you don't accidentally screw up your current project
2. Load up an instance of Kompakt into it
3. Turn on the automation record (down in the transport area)
4. Hit record, and then start fiddling with the appropriate knob (one at a time!) in Kompakt
5. Press stop, and then when you go to the pull-down menu that shows you the 511 different automatable parameters, the one that you've recorded will be highlighted in a different colour (green in the Classic Scheme). Write down the number and repeat the procedure.

Ugh.

Yeah, but it takes so LONG to set up a test edit!!

Touche! Actually, I haven't been back into MY studio since that conversation - bloody gigs!

At least you're getting gigs. ;) I've played in front of a "substantial" audience (not really) twice. Never did get a band together... we always had 3 multi-instrumentalist/singers that wanted to form a band, but we could NEVER get a drummer to last more than a few weeks or become a real part of it all.

Now the other 2 dudes have moved away and I've never bothered looking for a band.

I'd rather NOT be getting gigs, actually. I'm getting offered more and more production work, and that's where I'd like my life to head. Of course, I still enjoy gigging, but they're covers gigs, and the odd hours get to you after a while...
