A question about filters

What is the difference between filters and effects? Or are some effects called filters? Sorry it doesn't sound like a cleaver question but I'm still confused about it.
Thanks.
Thanks.

In Tracktion, synths and effects are called filters.
Eventually something intelligent will appear written here. Watch this space.

It's all a bit muddled everywhere you look, and there are exceptions and lots of devices that are not just one thing, but the basic idea is:
filters remove (e.g. low-pass, EQ)
processors alter (e.g. FFT, dynamics)
effects add (e.g. delays, modulation (amp, phase frequency))

If you cook you a coffee, you first filter the coffee powder, then you maybe apply a milk and sugar effect and finally you process it by drinking. The result (coming out) looks quite different then.

To add to the confusion: even a simple volume fader (when used properly) can be an effect... In essence this is what all the dynamics effect processors do: change volume fast & intelligently.
My MusicCalc is temporary offline.
