Hello, my Colleagues,
You can get Magix Music Studio Deluxe 2005 for free after a $28 rebate if you pick it up at a CompUSA store. Can order on-line, but gotta go in-store to get it.
Link is here: http://www.compusa.com/products/product ... tabtype=rb
Yeah, I know, this isn’t gonna be your main sequencer; MIDI Studio is old Logic code, etc. And no track inserts, which is lame. But it does have some interesting features, and I suspect could be used for tweaking audio and MIDI files, playing with drum loops, and so on. I use Tracktion now, because life’s too short to spend it just learning how to use the software, but I liked Logic’s Piano Roll, don't like Tracktion's, and plan to get MSD to see how close it comes to Logic.
And -- free (well, except for tax) ain’t so bad for a new toy to play with to spend time avoiding actually making music.
Here’s a KVR thread on an update, don’t know if it’s already rolled into the retail box these days: http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewtopic ... sic+studio

Take care,
GreyLion

Cool - it might be "worth it" (worth the trouble of sending the rebates, that is) just for Magix's Melodyne-esque Elastic Audio.

Yep. I've played with earlier versions of MSD, and there are all kinds of neat bits in it, depending on your needs. Drum synths and other synths and various effects and tools for manipulating sound and MIDI, and on and on.
For instance, I'm gonna try using Audio Studio, which is supposedly a cut-down Samplitude, as my audio clip editor in Tracktion. I know nothing about ReWire, and wonder, assuming the Piano Roll and Drum Roll in Midi Studio are worthwhile, if I could ReWire into Tracktion to flat-out replace the native one. Haven't a clue on that, dont know about host vs. client issues...

It's definitely worth $28......Midi studio is old logic code, and it has it's limitations, but you can do things with it, that you couldn't do with Logic 5.5.1
You also get Samplitude.......they call it Audio Studio, you don't get midi, it's all audio, and you don't get Samps convuluttblahblahblah reverb. But you've got everything else, Robota, Pitch shift, everything......it is awesome, and worth the price of admission..........easy.

Ilove it-works quite well with importing Babya Logic MIDI and other files. It's also a version of Logic-v 5.4

It's a very good audio recorder and editor. It's only 16 bit, though, and the support people at Magix have such a harsh approach toward customer service that I abandoned them and went with Audition. But I agree it's worth $30.

Oh.... Yes....
How could I have forgotten to mention the interface with Babya Logic?........
Also, I don't actually _know_ this, but they say this version of MSD supports 24-bit now... And remember, it's not $30 -- it's FREE. Assuming you get the rebate, of course.

The box and marketing material will imply this, but it will not actually let you end up with 24/96 samples. It will *mix* at 32 bit, yes. But it's not a 24/96 sampler. Also, the sequencer app is still 16/44.1GreyLion wrote:Oh.... Yes....

I'm not saying that makes it bad. I will tell you that if your sound device is locked at 48kHz (because it's plugged into an external clock source, for instance), the sequencer will not work at all. OR, sometimes it might work, but you will be continually dismissing warning dialogs that tell you your bitrate isn't supported.
I really wanted to continue using this software, it solved a lot of problems for me. But I abandoned it and now use a combination of FLS, eXT, and Audition.
To be honest, I still miss Magix's audio editing interface and the mixer. It really is a good recorder. I suspect it really is a version of Samp, at the core.

On the 48 KHz thing -- I started out on MicroLogic 4.8.1, sooo long ago, and was excited when I got my new professional-level Audigy card the month they debuted.
Drove myself crazy for two weeks trying to get it to work, finally RMA'ed it when I found out that they were frequency-locked at 48 KHz, and MicroLogic just plain froze up when confronted with this.
My understanding is that all Creative cards and a few others (but not the E-MUs) are also locked, so MSD likley won't be a Good Experience for you if you have one.
I ended up with an Audiophile 2496, which I love, though the drivers have occasionally been extremely cranky from version to version. I'm using the .0027 drivers now, becuase newer ones don't work on my new Compaq 1520NZ. Crystal clear and stable now.

when it says 24/96 on the box, it is refering to audio studio. They fully expect you to use midi studio, for midi. and very little audio. then open up audio studio, and import all the wav files. Whenever they are talking about the killer audio features, they are talking about AudioStudio. When they are talking about midi, they are talking about midi studio.

There is some confusion with versions here, I think. The Elastic Audio and 24bit support relates to Music Studio 10, not 2005 which is 16/4x.
If you want to take a close look at the .ini file you may be able to do something about the 24bit. Audio Studio does have the goodness of Samplitude underneath. It's a pretty good deal for free, though.

Hi Thunderkyss, out of interest what can you do in it that you can't do in Logic. Thanks...thunderkyss wrote:It's definitely worth $28......Midi studio is old logic code, and it has it's limitations, but you can do things with it, that you couldn't do with Logic 5.5.1

How could I have forgotten to mention the interface with Babya Logic-what do you mean by that (the UI?)?

I don't know what they mean by interface with babyLogic. I don't even know what babyLogic is. But I know MS will read Logic songs. It says it doesn't understand it or something, but it opens up anyway. That's how I got my XV5050 instrument definitions in there.
with midi studio, you can drag and drop files from your desktop to the arrange pane, wether they are cd, mp3, wav, or ogg.......Logic 5.5.1 had no idea what an mp3 was, and didn't support drag and drop. You also had to import files one at a time, where in midi studio, you can select multiple files.
midi studio will also let you export an mps, ogg, or whatever.
recording/sequencing wise, it's about the same, except for the 16/44.1 limitation, and MS supports DirectX.
My only real gripe with midi studio, is that it doesn't see my spdif

Thanks for that info - mp3 support is something I miss in Logic 5.51 for PC. I like to import tracks for study and find it a pain to have to create a large WAV or AIFF for the job.
