At one point, I was all hot to get the XXL edition of this software, but then I decided to try other hosts instead.

I have EnergyXt and Tracktion 2 now. Is there anything that FL Studio, probably at the Producer Edition level now, can offer me that these hosts can't? I do have some background in pattern-based music production, so I get that portion of what FL offers.

According to me, it will offer you nothing more than eXT and Tracktion do.

I like the FL Step sequencer approach. Do Tracktion and XT have a step sequencer????

just wondering.

At one point, I was all hot to get my wife a boob job, but then I decided to try my next door neighbor instead.

I have the next door neighbor and her sister now. Is there anything that my wife, with the two new tits, can offer me that these girls can't? 8)

Nothing I have used comes close to the power and usability of FL's piano roll. For drums, nothing is easier than the combo browser + step sequencer. But that's just my take.

it really depends on your workflow. If you have alot of audio tracks, and you are planning on getting an all in one host, go for tracktion 100 percent.

If you want a sequencer, FLstudio is the way to go. As far as comparison to Ext, FL is much simpler at the get go, and has many complex features. I usually can get a song going pretty quick in FL.

As far as midi editing, FL would kill tracktion any day. Iam not familiar with the midi and pattern editing in Ext, so i cant comment on that.

i would say, create a song in each one, see how you like the workflow, anything you dont like, come here and ask :)

without getting into a feature review , one thing that FLS can offer that the other two don't is free lifetime upgrades ...

I use all 3 hosts you mentioned and can tell you they offer different things.
I love each one for their different quirkinesses (does that word exists :?: )
Tracktion ( I still use 1) is excelent for audio.
EXT is awesome in its simplicity and modular approach
FL is a very complete host that does audio but not as good as T. The patter based workflow is wonderful and fast and the piano roll is among the best I have tried (unlike T)Besides you can use FL and EXT inside each other or all of them inside Tracktion
Try to use the simpler FL style and see if you really need the mixer. I could afford it so I bought XXL, but it could not be the way you need to go.
Try the demo or whatever and have fun.

The main thing I wanted XXL for was Sytrus. But I now have proabably about 30 VST synths, some commercial (WusikStation and variants such as Vox'd, etc., for example), many free. Sytrus I'm sure is a great synth, but it's the only thing that I feel the XXL package offers that I would actually want. If I really want a great FM synth that can import DX7 presets, I'll buy FMHeaven. (Which is on my "eventual purchase" list.)

Does the XXL package have any other goodies that make it clearly superior? I already have a Soundfont player, for example. What's so great about the FL one?

Another positive aspect of Fruity is a very nice approach to automation (be sure and check out all the little features it offers) and the ability to dismiss/recall all modules with an F key. There's something really nice about being able to kill screen clutter to me, buy YMMV. I really like Sytrus, too, but that's extra money (which might be offset by the free upgrades over time).

I bet Tracktion has FL whipped on audio recording, though.

Many people will disagree, but I think the most powerful feature of FL is the simplest of all - the 3xOsc. It's 3 stereo oscillators driven through the sampler channel, and it really is limitless in its power. Of course, there's better tools for doing FM, but I've found that you can get almost anything with subtractive synthesis as with FM.

What makes the combination of 3xOsc and Sampler better than Wasp, SimSynth, or any of the other "good" subtractive synths is the envelopes. The sampler channel gives you envelopes in both directions for volume, filter frequency, filter resonance, and pitch, including settings for LFO for all of those as well as many types of filters that are included. Stereo detune and phase offset are included in the 3xOsc package, and if you need a warm sound you can always use a colorful EQ of which there are many good ones freely available.

Nothing. The company that made it have ceased to be, so there's no support for it. Image Line are still selling it. I've tried logging a few bug reports against it, but nada.

FL Studio has free lifetime updates for the download version. Definitely a plus for me. While others may scoff, the looping capabilities in FLS are excellent.
