Hey all. I'm intending to try and get some gigs, just small ones at first

Anyways.. I don't have a laptop, so I'll be carting around my PC tower and a smallish monitor. (will have help for this)

I have an Audiophile PCI card in my computer, it has an SPDIF output, and an RCA stereo pair. Obviously the RCA pair will go into the venue's system.

I was wondering, is it possible to use a pair of headphones with the SPDIF output - for monitoring files in Ableton Live without the sound going to the club's system.

Or am I going to need a new soundcard with more outputs??

Pretty fekkin skint, laptop isn't really possible at the moment.

I understood what you meant, and thanks very much for the advice. A new card would probably be cheaper than getting something to covert the SPDIF to analog.

I would love to get a laptop and a Firewire Audiophile, but current situation is that I can hardly afford to stab myself in the balls, let alone buy stuff for my hobby.

hmm even onboard chips have more than 2 outputs nowadays...
auditioning in Live is pretty easy if you have that (activate at least 2 pairs of outputs and then put the master cue output on one)

I'd recommend a small mixer for this, one with a headphone amp built in for monitoring with cans. And preferrably multiple outputs (effects sends or aux sends may work) so you can feed both your own monitor and the PA.

Yeah, just get the tiniest, cheapest Behringer mixer you can find. They are quiet and work well.

Playing Live....
