Looking at the list of TV faves it seems to me that the best of them feature live groups or orchestras.
Are there any computer based composers that have written good tv themes?

The last 15 years of the existence of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop?

csi,not so much the theme but the music throughout the show(las vegas,i dunno bout the others) has some excellent "computer" music, frop glitch to trip hop, seems very forward thinking compared to most tv shows.

I love the radiophonic workshop but did they actually use computers as we know them today?
Delia Derbyshire would never have used a VST!
She would have created her own sound using an old tape machine, a steel bucket and a couple of spoons!
Thats my problem with all the new synths - they do it all for you. Where's the creative human element? The spoons! Where are the spoons?

in the last 15 years yeah theyd use pcs, maybe in the days of old they used all the wonderful machines with valves and tape and stuff, but the newer stuff would at least be recorded onto pc surely?

Delia Derbishire seems the type who would have lots of fun with Max/MSP or CSound, actually.sonarman wrote:Delia Derbyshire would never have used a VST!

I could be wrong, of course.

Bergerac. That had a great theme.
They've f**ked a lot of old themes by adding jungle beats and pointless filter shenanigans.

must say though only the original csi has some fitting great music happening, but somehow in the miami and NY series I feel a bit disappointed about the musicvurt wrote:csi, not so much the theme but the music throughout the show(las vegas,i dunno bout the others) has some excellent "computer" music, frop glitch to trip hop, seems very forward thinking compared to most tv shows.

what makes me wonder is the fact that almost any music played throughout the show is not from the composer listed in the intro credits but taken from existing albums from (underground) artists. on german tv they always cut off the end credits, so i don't know if they get mentioned there. but i clearly heard tracks from: "the cinematic orchestra" and "four tet". and my guess is that most of the background music if not all is from such artists. hm!vurt wrote:csi, not so much the theme but the music throughout the show(las vegas,i dunno bout the others) has some excellent "computer" music, frop glitch to trip hop, seems very forward thinking compared to most tv shows.

In my opinion, the best and most favoured TV theme was mainly synth based - X files.

i was gonna mention this in the other thread, but in the late 70's and into the 80's and perhaps a bit 90's, there were some great tv news themes done on synths with very "modern" (like in future/space/robotic) sounds ala repetitive sequenced bits and minimalist melodic phrases and blip blip percussive bits and such, very kraftwerk/jarre type stuff...i loved those things....the one now for the bbc world news (on pbs in the states) is pretty good, but shows more of the trend toward dancey/drum machine type stuff...
in the us most of it is now "call to arms" sampled horns and tympany and shit like that or "soundtracky" stuff...blahgghhh...not my thing....it's very current tech driven i suppose...
i guess i just like that old analog synth stuff, i'm like an old grumpy guy who only likes "oldies" rock 'n roll..."you kids get outa my yard...no, you can't have your ball back"
i'm a dork,

If anything can be blamed for killing TV-themes, it is the fact that TV networks are making the shows shorter to make room for more commercials.
Take The Simpsons as an example. The original theme song and opening sequence is about 1 minute 15 seconds.
But In the most recent seasons, they have been using an edited version of the opening sequence which is only about 15-20 seconds long (depending on the couch gag).
That's a full minute of theme song, which has been cut (I'm not exagerating)!
And if you lok at new TV shows, they all have very short theme songs. Often the theme is nothing more than a 3 second riff.
The reason is that tv-networks are making more rooom for commercials, and cutting the length of TV shows. Themes songs are just not prioritized in the same way that they were in the 70's and 80's.
