is it just me or does no one here care about PT 7 coming out? i think the only relevant thing about the update is it will streamline the virtual instrument side of things which was always a headscratcher to me. personally i'm excited for it, i doubt many people here are though.

I care. We have two PT/Digi002 setups. I'll be the one that has to know what's changed.

Less and less ppl agree with the hype. There are better
options.
options.

What's complicated in the 3 steps only ? :streamline the virtual instrument side of things
1. create 1 aux and 1 midi track
2. load the instruments in aux
3. set the midi input-output...
i'm affraid that the change is only
1. create an inst track
2. load the instrument
3. set the midi input-output
wow ...

I really hoped a little more for PT7
1.bounce in realtime AND non realtime
2.freeze track
3.Real PDC ... because now we have one that a lot of people are not aware of: "Pro Tools LE DOES compensate for host-based plug-ins using the CPU for processing by way of the HW buffer"
So this stripped down version of PDC work up to HW buffer time and don't work for external hardware.
4.maybe up to 48 tracks
5.maybe surround
6.maybe copy to send
For PT7 i hoped more to get one of our most request ...
Anyway i'm glad with what i have now and will nevertheless upgrade to PT7 (and continue to whine and wait until we have all TDM features ...

Don't get me wrong, I've seen good producers do great things with PT, but it's shocking how the industry giant could be so slow to develop their product. Of course, it's always been one of the best at having all the little things (and some big things, like sidechaining) implemented just right, but most of these features wouldn't even be a highlighted feature on most hosts' annual upgrades, let alone be bullet points for an upgrade two years in the making. It's still fundamentally solid software, but wouldn't you assume that they'd have more programmers (of higher skill) to implement important features with all that pro money they rake in?
With host processing quickly making expensive DSP irrelevent (with multi-core advancements and mature system-linking features) and Nuendo maturing under Yamaha's patient management, it'll be interesting to see how and if Digi keeps up over the next few years.

be glad you aint at our place then,20 g5's with digi oo2s hehe, glad i only have to play with em and not keep em serviced(the digi002s are quite troublesome apparently?)whyterabbyt wrote:I care. We have two PT/Digi002 setups. I'll be the one that has to know what's changed.

Well we got ten MBoxes as well, so we're 2/3rd of the way there on numbers....
(And yeah one of our Digi002's is playing up at the mo')

I don't know, man...Not sure what you're working with. I use two PowerMac G5's (both dual processor), and a dual Opteron PC. They're powerful, they talk to each other, and its wonderful that the technology keeps moving ahead. I will always be on it.saturdaysaint wrote: With host processing quickly making expensive DSP irrelevent (with multi-core advancements and mature system-linking features) and Nuendo maturing under Yamaha's patient management, it'll be interesting to see how and if Digi keeps up over the next few years.
But there's nothing more powerful or RELIABLE than than TDM. Some of the plugins I use on TDM chips would choke my computers. They still have a long way to go. And I could never work a native mix the way I can with PTHD.
PT7 will be like the other upgrades: slow, steady advancement. They don't usually offer more than they can deliver well. Not very sexy, I know. But it always works.
The midi/ softsynth side of ProTools is so bad, though, that I have to admit it needs major help on that end of things. I do all of that in SONAR on another computer and record it into PT. But IMO you can't touch PT on the audio, tracking/bussing and mixdown side of things, which is everything else.
Will PT7 bring the midi/virtual instruments area up to par? I hope so, but I would probably continue using one or two other computers for VSTs as well. They work better that way. Some use an awful lot of CPU.

well it might be a small step but it would still take a lot of work to make that change. at least they're making an effort to improve that ridiculous scheme.dramsenik wrote:What's complicated in the 3 steps only ? :streamline the virtual instrument side of things

i know the update faces criticism, i read that stuff over at the DUC - i think the best term to describe it all is "Armchair Developers". I guess the best thing is to just wait and let the program evolve. I think longtime Pro Tools users could've only dreamed about having things like Beat Detective in the LE version (yayaya i know fruity loops has had that stuff for ages but whatever)
PT LE is very limited but it does some things so beautifully i wish other hosts could do things like what it does. different strokes for different folks, you use pro tools cause you are in a situation that needs it, if you're not in that situation your not likely to buy it. maybe the m-powered thing will change that for some people.
i was talking to an editor last week about maybe doing some work for him at home. what was the only question he asked me? "do you have ________ ?"

Yep, that's exactly the reason why I keep an M-box around. am I doing any actual work with it? not really. but the pro tools branding is rooted so deep that even my grandmother is familiar with the name.
Best,
midi.

ha yeah i've also found that sometimes if you tell someone who knows absolutely nothing about music software that you use Pro Tools they say to themself "jeez who does this guy think he is? some sort of wannabe pro snob!"Midi_Glider wrote: the pro tools branding is rooted so deep that even my grandmother is familiar with the name.

you'll notice that the Headphone jacks on those things get ripped out by your obnoxious classmates who are overly excited to get started using the flashy interface(that's what happened when i was in school). If you really want to do some damage put them in Vegas mode to induce limp faders.vurt wrote: be glad you aint at our place then,20 g5's with digi oo2s hehe, glad i only have to play with em and not keep em serviced(the digi002s are quite troublesome apparently?)

It could happen1.bounce in realtime AND non realtime
It will probably never happen2.freeze track
PT will never have true pdc for mpowered/le. That is why you pay more money for the TDM/hardware stuff. I didn't say I like it, but that is how it works.3.Real PDC ... because now we have one that a lot of people are not aware of: "Pro Tools LE DOES compensate for host-based plug-ins using the CPU for processing by way of the HW buffer"
So this stripped down version of PDC work up to HW buffer time and don't work for external hardware.
Not gonna happen, but it should.....very dissapointing.4.maybe up to 48 tracks
Originally as a program that used external hardware only for real processing/recording this is a problem for le/mpowered for life. If anyone has le/mpowered then you know how hoover-like disc usage can be. This is somthing that will have to be re-done to get the tracks up.
TDM, that's it.5.maybe surround
please clarify what you mean. I am pretty sure that could be happinin' if I am understanding you.6.maybe copy to send
6.8 (mpowered) is so stable it will be hard to match, but I believe there will be some little niceties that will appeal to those who "get it" when it comes to pt.Anyway i'm glad with what i have now and will nevertheless upgrade to PT7 (and continue to whine and wait until we have all TDM features ...![]()

Free upgrade?
I also really want a revamp on the midi, so it's like all the other sequencers are - each having their own key editor instead of it on the one screen as it is. Also more midi features like how Logic works.
I own all the sequencers and find that the midi side in Protools is the only thing letting it down except for maybe the track count also.
