Since programming realistic sounding hi-hats with MIDI has proven to be a pain, I've taken to looking for hi-hat loops and while researching, have discovered that most loop libraries are severely lacking what I need.
I pulled out my loop collections that have been collecting dust. Most of them are ACID libraries I purchased a few years ago that I never got much mileage out of. The closest solution I have found is the RADS library, which I never used much since the syncopation of most of their kick & snare loops were never my style. Almost all my other loop CDs are full kit mixes without separate hi-hat loops.
I need some acoustic-based hi-hat loops for rock, no electronic sounding hats. I need some good loops with chokes, hi-hat going from closed to open, several variations on steady 8th note counts on an open hat and so on. I don't minding cutting up loops if it will get the job done.
Does any know of any good libraries specifically for hi-hat loops that have a good consistent sound and several variations?
I'd also consider a good samplepack for EXS or Battery that is specifically hi-hat samples that sound consistent with one another with a wide variety of hits. But I don't wanna shell out for two or three average libraries or samplepacks, I want to invest in one really good one that has enough variation for what I need.
Any suggestions?

if you know what yer style is, you should be able to program it. slow down the tempo just for recording hatsspittingangels wrote:my style

The Burning Grooves Xpander for Stylus RMX from Spectrasonics has a nice collection of Hihatloops on it.
Lots of useful variations.
Plus it has a ton of great Kick, Snare and full loops AND some killer fills that are also quite hard if not impossible to program!
Totally rocks!

I need hats, that's it. I'm content with what else I have from sampler instruments I already own. I'm not willing to shell out another $300+ for yet another sampler instrument like Stylus or BFD if there's an alternative that gets me what I need, which is hi-hats. Those apps may be great but ,from what I understand, they are also resource hogs and overkill for what I need.
MIDI is really limited for hi-hats unless you don't want to go beyond a simple open/closed/pedal setup and that works for you. Anything more complex becomes a pain. Sure, I could do it but I'm looking for something that's going to allow me to be more efficient and not spend my time auditioning and timeshifting samples.
I've got a few drummer friends so theoretically, I could set them up and record a bunch of hi-hat but then I'd have to create all the loops, process and normalize them, clean up the timing and so on.
I am hoping someone can point me in the right direction to some pre-made hi-hat specific libraries or ones that at least have a wealth of hi-hat loops to work with.

Cant say if RMX is an overkill for your application but its certainly not more demanding on my CPU than any of my other plugs.
Anyway-keep in mind that a normal sample library will never give you the flexibility and quality compared to RMX when you want to use the hihatloop at any other tempo than the one it was recorded at .
Normal Timestretching is particulary ugly with stuff like hihats and cymbals.
In RMX i can easily play a hihatloop at half the original tempo and it still sounds just as good as the original version because it doesnt rely on timestretching but on eventslicing.

while i appreciate the suggestions on other instruments, they don't really address my initial question about sample libraries.
so, anyone know of any actual loop libraries they can suggest?

thats the thing..I can suggest to you a couple. but just looping hats is not going to help much due to timestretch..etc..that's why many people buy RMX just for the hat patterns and the percussion.
