Hello,
Have you ever bought an album on a whim, either having never heard that artist/group's work or after only hearing one track?
I have, sometimes it'll turn out to be a winner, but more often not.
For example, Fourtet - Everything Ecstatic. I bought this after hearing lots of people raving about Fourtet, this album was the cheapest so I took a gamble - total shit (IMHO of course).
So come on, let's hear your stories...

Not on a whim, but I'd never heard anything by them, just read descriptions of how they worked that were printed in a home-recording magazine.

I just thought of another one. Being a pretty big fan or N.E.R.D and most Neptunes remixes I've heard, I bought The Neptunes - Present Clones. One of the few albums I took back to the store and asked for a refund, when asked why I explained "it's the worst CD I've ever heard and my ears were offended by such total bollocks"....

I can remember two that I bought just 'cuz I liked the covers. You may be old enough to remember Lucifer's Friend? I had never heard of them, but I bought their album Banquet on a whim. I bought Starcastle - Fountains of Light for the same reason... cool cover...

Er this is going back a bit but I remember my first music impulse buy disaster was the 'Revenge' album from Peter Hook of New Order fame. I quite liked New Order during the Eighties and when this was released around 89-90 I thought this might be alright. No it was Cack, I was so dissapointed that I took the f**ker after just one spin on me Ma's crappy old turntable and launched it from the front door straight out into the street and gleefully watched as it arced in a frisbee like dive and smashed into several pieces on the road.Hmmm felt good at the time but I sometimes regretted not taking it back to exchange for something else. (

Anyway to end on a good note recently bought on a whim Senor Smoke by Electric Six, Hmmm thought it said ELECTRO Six. Bit like the old Street Sounds compilations. Anyway took it home and they're some kind of disco/rock comic outfit with a lead singer who sounds like the one from the Crash Test Dummies. Some great lyrics in there and pretty good musical arrangements too. This one's for keeps I think

Just make the music that you enjoy (failing that go for a walk, watch some porn, have a fight with a random bloke until something else happens).

On topic. I regularly buy albums because of band names, album names or albumcovers...
Rarely if they're full price though. The gems you find are worth it. But my friends think I'm nuts.

I bought 'Spiderland' by Slint because some people thought it was a classic. Well, it's not a total classic, but it contains one of the greatest songs I've ever heard [perhaps even the greatest] called 'Good Morning Captain'. It was worth the price just for that one song. Brilliant. And the other songs don't suck either.

I bought The Strokes - Is This It. That alone qualifies me as an ubertwat. That's why i love torrents so much, i don't buy (what IMO is) garbage one good track ten filler cd's anymore (saying that, i'm not sure what the good one on Is This It was.)
I have a few more (pre torrent) purchases i am ashamed off, but no more i tell ya, NO MORE!!!!111!!
Oh, and before anyone picks on me over downloading music, i only refuse to buy shit now, i still buy more than my fair share of cd's (just recently bought talking heads album discography and am currently collecting any will oldham related releases that ebay / hmv / amazon etc has to offer.)
As for a winner i bought on a whim. I bought Elliott Smith - Figure8 (it was an advance copy on sale for 50p in my local......wonderful record store.) I now have all his releases (not that there are many sadly.)
