Recorded Audio Clips 'Breaking Up' in Tracktion V2 (&V1.

Guys, I've had this similar problem (on and off) in V1.6 too, which is; that for no obvious reason to me, recorded sounds through the mic input of my Creative 5.1 Live Platinum Breakout Box is captured with a juddery broken-up quality about it. The anomally is not always present, but more often than not.

This is where the mystery lies: Cool-Edit Pro V2 works perfectly, so the problem is not in the hardware, so I naturally suspect the settings in Tracktion. I am using Wuschel's ASIO4ALL driver and the problem still occurs, even if I move he 'samples buffer' size out to greater than 2000 samples. Also, I have a delay loop going out of the Headphone jack as well, which happens to be around the length delay as the buffer size set in the Asio Driver's Control Panel. :?:

Any suggestions on my problem (and how to remove the feedback loop) would be appreciated.

Regards,

Bagungie

My System is: Twin Pentium III's, 512 Mb RAM, WindowsXP Pro.

A quick question:

In Cool Edit, which drivers are being used? Also the ASIO4ALL, or something different?

Thanks Lunch Money for your interest... 8)

Cool Edit Pro uses the 'SB-Live' wave device driver to record & playback audio files, and does not use, or for that matter, NEED TO USE Steinberg's ASIO driver technology.

Maybe the problem could be in the ASIO4ALL Asio driver, although it seems that I get a much lower latency with this ASIO driver when accessing the VSTi plug-ins than using the selection of standard drivers that Tracktion offers, such as:
'Direct Sound';'ASIO DirectX Full Duplex Driver', or the 'ASIO multimedia' Driver.

I suppose that I need to trial each of the alternative drivers when I am trying to record directly into Tracktion and see if the problem goes away...(although if it does, I'm not too happy with the need to change my drivers when I am trying to record digital audio)...

The other option is to see if Creative have some updated drivers for the 'Live' Sound Card, as I am currently using the generic WindowsXP driver that it choses when installing the OS.

I'd say there's a good chance it's driver-related. I also had horrible luck with the "Direct Sound" option. The "Full Duplex Driver" and "ASIO multimedia" drivers aren't native to Tracktion, but sound like holdovers from a previous Cubase install (in the old days before I got a dedicated card, a bonus of the old Cubase VST 5.x demo was that the drivers didn't expire, and you could use them in Tracktion!).

In the meantime, tweaks to ASIO4ALL would probably help. Don't do them from within Tracktion, because if I'm not mistaken, they won't work. In the ASIO4ALL control, I'd set your samples to something fairly non-aggressive like 512. However, the best way is to either:

1. Go aggressive (ie. 256... with a Live card, I wouldn't bother even trying anything less) and then back off bit by bit until the crackling stops
2. Go conservative (ie. 4096) and then get more aggressive until crackling begins.

I also found with my Live card and 'makeshift' drivers that I had to freeze and/or render more often, thus putting fewer expectations on my computer. Mind you, at the time I was also running a pretty modest computer (Athlon 1800+).

If ASIO4ALL doesn't give you satisfaction, you may get more luck out of the KX Project drivers (Google will give it to you in the first or second hit). I actually used KX for longer than ASIO4ALL since the latter wasn't available at the time. KX was a bit of a trick to get going (switching at will between mic and line inputs is something I've surely forgotten by now) but once I did, it offered excellent performance.

Creative don't offer ASIO drivers for Live cards, but I guess it doesn't hurt to have the latest drivers anyhow. ;)

Yeah, the latest drivers from Creative makes good sense. Certainly worth a try, as is the KX Project drivers if the new drivers don't help.
