delay w/ mod insert

I've been at this for a while now, but I'm still stumped. I've been trying to set up a delay with a distortion inserted in the middle. If there's a delay that allows for other plug-ins to be inserted into it's line, I'd love to see it, but otherwise, I've just been attempting to use a single repeat from the delay sent to the distortion and back to the delay and use the delay's output fader as my master feedback control. However, most DAW software manufacturers have tried to outsmart me and don't allow feedback loops within their mixers. Aside from sending the signal out to a hardware output and offsetting for the D/A/D conversion latency, is there a way to do this?

I usually just do it the feedback routing way you mentioned. Besides that, there are a few delays that have effects inside the feedback path. Ronin (from Audiodamage) has a cool routing matrix, so you can put a filter and saturation in the feedback. You could put something together with SynthEdit pretty easily too. My favorite delay might just be the ECHO3 for Creamware...but this plugin only works on the Creamware DSP cards. It is semi-modular...you can put up to 4 inserts inside the feedback path, and then inserts prior to the feedback, and at the output. Fun stuff.
BTW what DAWs are you using? I know some DAWs with plugin delay compensation will freak out if you try this. There are some workarounds though, depending on what software you are using.

I usually sequence in Fruity Loops and multitrack in Sonar. I'll look into the synthedit deal. I've heard a lot about it but have yet to try it. Thanks

Ronin is really your only bet short of coding your own modules in Synthedit. It is the only modular delay around, it's also fantastic.
In Synthedit, feedback paths are delayed by a processing block (default 256 samples, but can be adjusted to your host settings) which cause problems for you.
You could also investigate other modular environments: Bidule, PD (using pdvst), QuantumFX, Synthmaker, Reaktor v5 (not sure how feedback loops work with these last three, though).
Cheers,
Steve

lurch - the free Retrodelay plugin has a distortion module....
Otherwise, how about apllying you delay signal 100% wet, then freezing it.
You can then distort just the delays and recover your original track untouched ???
