I have quite a few sample libs with keyranges that don't fit my keyboard (76 keys). I often find myself playing dead keys in the heat of the moment. Any advice for this problem, I'm sure plenty of others come up against it. I never thought I would have the prob of too many keys (i started out with 61 keybed and was always having to use shift buttons).

Sorry to change the topic (I think the answer is just do not hit keys that do not trigger your samples), but can I ask how you used the shift button when your keyboard was too small to include all the samples (and presumably key switches). Is that host dependent? (I use Sonar 3.1.1)

He means the octave shift button on his MIDI keyboard
Regarding the keyrange problem, maybe stick labels on where relevant keyranges go? You might need to remap/transpose some of your samples to fit all the relevant labels on... Unless there's some kind of LCD display you can get which you could put on your keyboard?

You could use energyXT to get around this:
load two samplers in the main window,
Route your MIDI in through eXTs MIDI patcher,
Set key ranges to go to separate MIDI outs of the midi patcher i.e. split your keyboard where the `empty` notes start/finish
You then need to pitch shift your samples in one of your samplers (up or down) to cover the range of previously empty notes.
The quality in these ranges may not be as good, particularly if pitch shifting a lot, and sustain times will change if not using timestretching pitchshift. But these are issues you can more deal with/ decide on if you decide to use this method anyhow and if you have timestretch software
Also don`t know if there is a freeware way to do this or maybe there already is a way in the sampler you use? Might be an idea to post what you are using so someone may be able to help regarding this if possible.

P.S. If you want a free wav timestretch prog Audacity has the soundTouch library implemented:
