...and how do you keep at it without getting bored?

Was your style of music taught to you or did it develop over time? Or did you know you wanted to make music like that when you first started out? Can a style really be taught, do you think?

I don't actually have a consistent style of music. I have a ton of musical influences, but no real style, and I wonder if other people are faced with the problem of not knowing what to do or where to go when you sit down at your music gear. It's really kind of a pain in the butt, isn't it?

Yes, but it can be liberating and pleasantly surprising too.

I think personal style is something that should best develop (and fluidly evolve) over time, not something to force yourself into. I tried to make myself write EBM for a while, and it was all pretty laughable. I find that these days I naturally tend to write somewhere on a spectrum between dark ambient and glitchy complex rhythm-driven stuff. When there's a melodic element in my music, it's pretty simple.

Right now I'm doing various contract work that has to fit the subject and mood, but not be of any particular genre. It also has to not be too weird or put people off too much. Bitcrushed, short-decay polyrhythmic stuff in 5/4 doesn't sell soap. (Not that I'm selling soap, but the metaphor holds.) So I'm trying to find a more neutral style and it's not coming entirely naturally to me, and I'm a bit conflicted about that.

I guess in my case style is within me, I mean, I never try to make a song fitting a particular style; However I can make songs very different from each other, it's not with the style. The style is mine, and that's liberating and slaving at the same time actually.

my style started evolving July 18th 1971, it chose me...to this day I'm just along for the ride. Who knows what my style will be tomorrow, or the day after...or the day after that...when it comes to playing my gi-tar I'm just part of the signal chain...however if I ever find the origin of the signal I'll let yah know...

I cam to the kind of harsh electro-industrial we do through a process of finding out that such a thing existed outside my head. I started off wanting to be a one-man rock band without guitars or drums and I went through a bit of an electro-goth phase, again before it existed as a genre before finding out how cool it sounded to run things through a distortion pedal. A couple of years later I discovered that there was actually a genre that catered for what I was doing. I mean, I had most of Skinny Puppy's stuff at the time but I had no real idea that there was anyone else doing anything remotely similar and I never really thought my se last thing.

Huh. You always struck me as a rock guy. It's neat what I learn about you people here.

Anyone know of a genre that combines orchestra with techno?

A constant yearning to crawl deeper into my instruments and being a huge sucker for experimenting with audio routings exploring the character of sound and try tame it (which offcourse never fully works)

I only have my ear as a teacher really; and as for style... I usually have no clue what I'm making untill its ready and even after that I oft still don't know

Your style, probably? Though I don't know much (i.e. anything) about techno, this sounds interesting, so why not give it a try?

Unless you have to cover an existing style/band/whatever, just do what you feel is something you like to do. Most musicians do have a clear feeling about that. However, many of them get quite irritated when this is nothing they know

I do some kind of orchestral stuff, but it is not "classical style" or "hollywood stlye" or whatever.
