Hi!

Recently I recorded a lead vocal track for a popsong in Cubase Sx2. Since it's so easy to just keep adding tracks thesedays I ended up with a bunch of different versions and now I want to "tidy up" the track and only use the best takes.

On some takes there might be a whole coherent verse and on other tracks the recordings have been done line by line.

The vocalist is really good but sometimes a bit out of tune. On some lines consisting of maybe 5 words there might be up to 10 different takes that all where ok (the bad ones I deleted straight away when recording). Now, first of all.....to chose between all these takes is HELL, sometimes I even just use one word out of a take that for some reason sounds better than the rest and sometimes it might be that the feeling and phrazing on a line is great but out of tune.

To correct this I want to use Melodyne to which I'm a newbie and I just don't know what would be the easiest way to work with this.

How would you do it? Should I build one coherent track with the lead vocal and insert a few takes that may be a bit out of tune but which I imagine would be better after correction in Melodyne than the other take that is in pitch but lacks the energy or should I just correct ALL the takes in order to be able to compare them more easily. Also I'm not really sure how to get these in sync in Melodyne (unless I want to process them acapella with no reference). I tried to find this in the manual but couldn't really find this info.

Next time I'll work harder with the vocalist to get things perfect straihtaway ; )

Thanks for any help

Well, here's what I do.

1. Comp the vocal as best you can.

2. Once you've got a complete take you like, duplicate it in the pool. Call it something like "Vocal Melodyne". Insert it on a new track, and mute that track and the original vocal track.

3. Arm melodyne for rewire in cubase, and then launch melodyne. Load the "vocal melodyne" file in melodyne. Make your changes, save the file, and quit melodyne.

4. Now in Cubase you have 2 vocal files, one of which is corrected. Comp between those two, and you're done.
Grist for the glamour mill.

I have the same problem with my vocalist. It's so obnoxious! I wouldn't think it would be that hard to hold a pitch but damn....

I like how you guys say "my vocalist" like it was your dog or cat :)
