It's the current skin. Replace it to use a different skin.

I think you can change colours of certain parts of the GUI.

Well, Dave Nicholson (SX\Nuendo GUI designer) have just recently posted this in one of the Nuendo forum thread:

Many years ago walked around the frankfurt music fair and saw Cubase VST 5 with palm trees and bare naked ladies as project background bitmaps - never again.

this might explain it...

for the record, people use the host that is easiest to get a cracked version for, and cubarse tops the ranks...so there
