Hi
ive read couple of texts and articles where were vst plugins mentioned but i still dont exactly understand what it is
would anyone be so nice and answer me my stupid question? what are vst plugins and what are they used for?

VST plugins are audio effects such as delay and reverb, a VSTI is a instrument, a lot of programs these days let you run VST and VSTI such as cubase and fruity loops. Basically they are used to make music and other audio based projects.

VST stands for Virtual Studio Technology developed by Steinberg. It is one of the several protocols out there. The other ones are DXi and AU (Audio Units). Plugin developers use one of the protocols for their plugins depending on their primary host target. Cakewalk Sonar has a native support for DXi plugin protocol but with a special adapter, it also recognizes and accepts VST plugins.

So i suppose VST, DXi and AU are programs that use samples to simulate midi in better quality and use plugins to control various samples's effects?

they may use samples, or they may generate them itself.

VSTIs are usually controlled by midi and either use generated waveforms such as sine and saw to create there sound or they are sample based, theres lots of synthesis methods and different forms of sound generation. Samplers are sample players and are often controlled using midi which is often used as the main pitch/frequency control for most synthesis types. There is also midi VSTs which effect the midi signal and can be used to turn a single note into a chord ect. Hope this helps

I'll also try to address this...

There are 2 types of VST plugins...

VST effect - is not a program, but a "plugin". These work with music programs to provide musical effects such as EQ, Echo, Reverb (the sound in a hall) and many more.

VST Instruments - These are again, plugins, which can be used with a music program to create sounds of pianos, orchestras, synthesizers, guitars and many more. These are basically a replacement for all the keyboards and sound modules that traditional studios have. As you mention, these can replace the lower quality general midi sounds that come with windows or with cheap sound modules.

The company to develop VST technology is Steinberg who also write the excellent Cubase and Nuendo programs. Both of these utilise VST technology. Additionally, many many other hosts also use the technology. It is now a standard and most companies that wish to provide music effects or instruments for music software, provide at least a VST version of their plugins. As mentioned already, there are several other standards, but VST is definitely the most popular.

do you have a host? (cubase, fl studio etc) i was in the same boat as you a year ago or so. if you have a host i'm sure we'll be able to help you out with hearing it for yourself. believe me it's fun.
