October 13, the first anniversary of his final broadcast, has been declared John Peel Day. Radio 1 put on a special gig at London's Queen Elizabeth Hall last night and are transmitting a six-hour special today, while BBC 6 Music have organised a whole week of tribute shows. Perhaps more poignantly, fans from all over the country have been putting on their own tribute gigs.

19:00 - 01.00 tonight on Radio 1

Peel Day

The very first John Peel Day is a celebration of John's life and massive contribution to music and broadcasting.

Live music from nationwide gigs features throughout as well as highlights from the Queen Elizabeth Hall concert featuring New Order, The Fall, Super Furry Animals, Misty in Roots, Venetian Snares, Laura Cantrell and Jawbone. Plus, fans and celebrities alike talk about their memories of John.

Peel Day now consists of over 300 gigs across the UK as well as events in Spain, Germany, Italy, USA, Holland, New Zealand and Canada.

"I just want to hear something I haven't heard before" - John Peel
