In what could be one of the most important musicological finds in years, a score handwritten by Beethoven was discovered over the summer at a suburban Philadelphia seminary and will be on display there Thursday.

The 80-page working manuscript of the composer's "Grosse Fuge" was found in July by Heather Carbo, a librarian at the Palmer Theological Seminary, while she was cleaning out an archival cabinet, according to Thursday's edition of The New York Times.

The score is expected to fetch $1.7 million to $2.6 million when it is auctioned by Sotheby's in London on Dec. 1. Before that, it will be on view at Sotheby's in New York from Nov. 16 to 19.

It's an amazing story, but it's kind of sad to read this part and then remember that Beethoven lived the later part of his life (when the Grosse Fuge was written) in such poverty.

Just saw a biography of Beethoven on the History channel yesterday - I guess this discovery is why they ran it. What an incredibly hard life, early and late in his years. Those certainly are the things they *didn't* cover in music history class.

Would Beethoven have finished one piece of music if he had all of our tools? Would he have finished twice as many? It is amazing what you can do with one instrument, discipline and imagination.

yes he would, he was not hung up on the fame or fortune like today's artists...he was an artist. No matter what, his artistic side would eventually find an outlet...just my opinion though...

Maybe I'm too sceptical to be standing in awe about this discovery. This part says it all

They are just hyping it up to get the best price.

Everything Beethoven did was HANDWRITTEN.

The "hand written" part isn't what is exciting people.

The "previously undiscovered" part is what makes it newsworthy.

what made me think was looking at the little sample of the score.
seeing all the things crossed out, corrections, etc
he (and anyone who can write/read scores) actually really writes his music.
just like we think and talk and know how to write down the letters in order to form words, sentences.
never thought about that this way.
i am kinda analphabet regarding music. i can "talk" it, but cannot read or write. hmm.

You read it here first: It'll go for a lot more than the expected price.

Why? Because it's friggin Beethoven!!! There are many millionaire/billionaire collectors out there frothing at the mouth right now, waiting to grab this. The price will go WAAYYY up!
