Many people here forget the true value of free midi files. I've never been to music schools and I learnt everything I know about orchestrations by studying midi files. The best way to get to know a software package like GPO is to take a midi file and try to make it sound like the recording. Succeeding is not the main objective, as you will never get it (different orchestrations, bad sequensing, lack of real players etc) but rather the learning experience is great.

I also like listening to a midi file while watching the notation in an app like noteworthy player. Its a musical education that someone like J.S. couldn't have dreamed of.

One thing. When I import those files into Sonar, they don't tell/change the tempo. How can I know which tempo I should use?

Edit: Ooops, nevermind, I should use OPEN instead of IMPORT.

That's true. But there's a hell of a lot of crap midi files about.
