Hi!

I'm making mostly techno/house with the occasional weird pastiche of any old style on the side ...

I'm "so nineties"

Electronic music (and other types of music to a growing extent) seems constantly to outdate itself faster and faster still - a fact that kind of worries me, or is it just me? I'm not trying for the "cutting edge" but it still worries me the tiniest bit...

Should I give a f**k anyway?

I see this rambling is going nowhere, I think it's just fuzzy sentiment along with a mild case of S_A_D

Who knows...
Is music becoming outdated faster and faster?
Do such categories even apply?

So if you feel like discussing this, for all I know this might turn into a 20-pager, or end with this post!

I often worry about things like this.

Im into the DnB scene and its moving so fast im a little uneasy about my production techniques.

read my sig, you're dated if you judge yourself by others in any one genre. I don't like the concept of music as a whole having a global time line. True most eras are affiliated with a genre, that doesn't make you dated. Your time line started when you started.

In other words, the music may be dated, but you're not for playing it...is a pianist dated if he/she plays a recital of all music from say the 19th century?

Sleeingsword, don't worry about such small things or you'll drive yourself mad...your last line imo is exactly how you should look at it...

Music is cyclic. If you are doing something now that sounds dated, give it a few years, and it will be cool again.

I have to agree with Hink. Don't worry about this sort of stuff. Just keep doing what you love to do and if the best criticism people can come up with is "this is so 90's", pat yourself on the back, because it could be a lot worse.

I think thoses considerations are wothwhile. In some cercles, it counts. As if you wanted to play at MUTEK or in a trendy european club, you have to have a "current" sound. But this is not attained while coying others, you have to push boundaries a little, and make your own sound.

If you do not fit in a genre, good luck promoting yourself. I do not myself like that, but now electronic music is so niche based... no good for me, but talking to people who make a living out of it, they had to position themselves in a genre, it seems to be a must, unless you have a label pushing you.

personally, i don't try to copy others. i just try to find my own expressivity and musicality, inspired by the music i like, whatever the genre and the date it comes from.
