good idea bad idea? please vote..

on a side note, would a powermac at 1.8ghz give much extra worthwhile grunt/benefits?

I had an iMac 2 Ghz 1.5 Gigs Ram. I bought it about a month ago, and kept it for exactly 1 week before returning it. I didn't buy it for music but since Cubase SX3 and Reason both have Mac installers on the CD, I thought I'd see how well it performs. With Cubase it was very sluggish compared to what I'm currently using (Athlon 64 3200+, 1 Gig Ram). Reason ran well enough that I didn't get a negative vibe from it, but definately Cubase is a lot more responsive on my current machine. I returned the mac because there seemed to be some kind of weird latency in the mouse and Apple tech support (friendly people who don't seem to know much more about macs than the average person) weren't helpful in the least. So I returned it and bought a fully loaded PC and a 20" monitor and had plenty of money to put back in my pocket. Strange about the mouse though. I've been using macs daily for a living for over a decade and never experienced this until Tiger. My dual 2 Ghz Mac at work also has this behavior but it's not nearly as noticeable.

I guess it depends what system you're coming from if it would be an upgrade or downgrade. But the 1.8ghz G5's I used at my school were frustratingly slow. I couldnt work like that. I mean I COULD but I wouldnt want to.

Krikey!!

Im taking a serious look at going OSX, for various reasons. There is a guy selling an imac, and another guy selling a powermac, both at 1.8, both the same price.. Im starting to think the powermac would be a much better option.

Im used to a fairly nippy 3.2 p4.

Would the g5 powermac, [also 1.8ghz] perform any better?

Post

Sorry, I can only compare it to equivalent priced PC's or faster model G5's. I havent worked with G4 1.8. Good luck in your quest. You can also ask here www.osxaudio.com and probably get a lot more responses.

Cubase is the most processor hungry thing you could put in a mac!
Logic, DP, Metro will do everything cubase can using the fraction of the power.
If you insist on cubase get the dual mac!

I got the powermac g5.

I love OSX and its running very well.

Im starting to doubt getting Cubase, Logic Express is looking like great value and very capable. Would it make the grade for professional recording?

Sure. If you're using hardware, definitely. I wouldn't recommend using lots and lots of VST's on it, because of your processor. If your sound card/audio/MIDI interface is good, though, you can get professional recordings, yep.

hmmm.. i was under the impression that logic would only use AU plugins and not VST.. no big deal tho..

thanks for the reply

I've never dealt with Logic, so you're probably right. I'm just saying in general, yeah, you can get pro recordings in Logic. :)

Macs are great for running Logic (since it only runs on Macs), but I can't see any other reason to get one for music. Logic is very nice though.
