Hi,

I was listening to a live performance from a relativly unknown artist to me yesterday. His name is Josh Groban. He sing "classical" songs ( or however you call this genre ). So today, I go into a music store, and I listen to his recorded CD. I don't know if it was the headphones at the store, or me, but I swear, I liked his live performance better!!!

So this got me thinking. In this age of studio manipulated audios and montages, and where everything has to be autotuned, is there any artists that sing as good or better live ( I don't know if they use autotune live but i am guessing not ) than in studio?

I came up with my own list. Please add your own. Btw, this is not from a "feel" perpective ( i.e they sing worse but the show was very fun ). I mean, they do really sing as good, or better then the recordings.

-Frank Sinatra
-Robert Cray
-Luther Vandross
-Whitney Huston
-Celine Dion
-Josh Groban
-Elthon Jhon

Add yours! :)

Billy joel is an awesome live performer indeed.
Ozzy definivly sucks live....In fact most of the singers nowadays suck live.

Here is a few who suck live:

-Mick Jagger ( no big vocal talent IMHO)
-R.E.M's Michale Stipe who is very good on CD doesn't sound half as good live
-Most of the hiphop singers ( eminem and band )
-Stevie Ray Vaughn. He was an AMAZING guitarist live, but the vocals sometime were deceiving live.
-James Hetfield, Metallica. This dude is gettin old

Forgot a couple who also are really good Live:

-Nat King Cole. This guy had an AMAZING voice, on record or live.
-Michael Bublé. Seen one of his shows live and he was extremly good

The 3 I've seen that immediately come to mind for me are Phllip Bailey (EWF),Dennis Deyoung (formerly of Styx) and Rik Emmett (Triumph). Geoff Tate in the early Queensryche days did also. Not recently though.

Edit: Also just thought of Tommy Heart from the German band "Fair Warning". Their guitar player is amazing also.

Oh Yeah!! EWF was for sure awsome in their day. Styx had hands down the best live vocals I have ever been witness to. I gotta add Steve Perry, when he was on it was spectacular. If you're gonna mention German vocalist I nominate Klaus Meine who was (is?) very good live. Pretty good guitar players too. :)

I tried to come up with some current vocalist but I haven't really seen anyone new live for awhile. From what I could tell from TV I think Chris Cornell has a great live voice.

You are right though, all the bands sound alike now and so do the vocals. Three Doors Down, Simple Plan.. ect. I can't tell them apart most of the time. It's worse now than ever because of MTV. Regions are practically gone unless you're into Swedish death metal and even death metal is getting homogenized. It's the same thing that happened with the hair bands and then grunge. You have to have the "look" or "style" very few lables look for "talent".

Since you mentioned David Lee Roth ...

He'll be just one of the rotating replacements for Howard Stern on Infinity Radio... :hihi:

David Lee Roth will be the host
of a new morning radio show.

Thom Yorke (Radiohead) always amazes me when he graces our city with a concert. Especially the outdoor ones.

The guy really can sing!

Greg Dulli from Afghan Whigs is a hell of a singer esp. live. Glad I 've seen them.
If I go insane, please don't put your wires in my brain

If he tries to do Howard's schtick it could be a disaster. He's got such a huge ego and it's so all about him, it might be unbearable. :D

Did you know that Patty Smythe (excellent live vocalist!!) was married to John McEnroe (has been) and that McEnroe's show on MSNBC cleverly titled "McEnroe" had a 0.0 share when it was canceled.... No? Well nobody else did ether.

I might be selling old Diamond Dave short though. We'll have to wait an see... I love a good car crash! :D :D

Pavarotti?
Elton John sounds crap live or recorded.

I am probably one of the few human beings that actually likedRoth's vocal style in Van Halen. To me, Sammy Hagar was nothing more than a screamer with all the vocal character and originality of a tortured rat. My opinion only (Alex now put's on flame-proof suit) :hihi:

Cheers,
