So...
I was talking today with a good sound engineer and a producer that did my band's first record (out yesterday) about all the butique gear you see in various ads (neve, amek...).
I asked him if it'd really do me good if I had some of it (he does have a lot) and he just said:
no, get your room sorted first and get a couple of good mics. that's all.
one of the tracks on the album we did at home and while it doesn't sound as good as thge studio tracks it still gets the emotion thru.
good players, good instruments, decent mics, presonus firepod.

Yeah its so easy to get into the "I just need this and I'll be ready to sound cool" mode isnt it?!?! I think Im in there now

Gear lust is good.
It may very well be irrelevant to your music, but it is good nevertheless. Have you ever met or heard of any serious musician who was successful, that didn't buy lots of yummy new toys when the royalty checques came through? And so would I. And lots of them.
In fact it's the only reason I would ever want to release anything or make money on music.
Fame is only for those with no self confidence or poor self-worth.
The groupies might be nice...but the wife would bloody kill me.
So the only reason left is to buy more and better toys. Who wouldn't like a room full of expensive gadgets? It's a means and end all on its own.
So there.

Most of my gear lust is directed toward microphones.
Just looking at the list of mikesat electrical makes me salivate.
That being said, it is truly amazing how many good cheap mikes there are these days. Oktava leads the way in this regard, and Audio Technica has some very reasonable prices as well.

As a hardcore synthophile, all of my gear lust goes to synthesizers; mostly wavetable synths. It's not the healthiest thing to obsess over, but sometimes, especially when it comes to synths, you do need more so you can better express yourself. You know, finding "that sound" is also very important and usually is the sole reason for my gear lust.

Marshall Electronics (MXL) makes some very nice mics at rock bottom prices also. I have an MXL2003 and it's quite a nice mic.

Agreed, getting the source sorted will make a big difference, but I don't think that's where it ends. For the best quality, the whole recording chain should be considered. Identify the weak link or where your moeny will amke the most difference. Usually that is improving the room and mics before buying half dozen boutique mic pres. But at some point the high end mic pre will be justified.soulata wrote:So...

My current thinking is to have a small selection of quality outboard, rather than racks of budget gear. It also makes connecting the studio up so much easier.
