I'm very new to this arena and I think I want to do something fairly simple. All I want to do is have my computer act as a guitar effects box. When I plug my guitar into my microphone input in my soundcard with a vst host loaded I don't get any sound, let alone processed sound. I'm able to load a plugin, but even that doesn't help. I've tried most of the free vst hosts out there and can't really get any of them to work. I'm using ASIO 4 all cuz I read that my soundcard would have too much latency. Will any or all of the vst hosts do what I want to do? I really want it to be free. Any common things I might be overlooking?

Try free or donationware hosts such as TobyBear's MiniHost (many features), Seib's VSTHost (many features), Kreatives' Kristal (doubles as a multitrack audio recorder!) and then add the free or donationware CTAF's Multifxvst chainer (like a free empty VST/VSTi rack). Then double click on your system audio icon, the little speaker at the bottom right of most Windows desktops. Options/Properties/Recording, make sure it's set to show the microphone channel, then select the microphone channel and set the volume like you want. Some card also show an advanced tab on the microphone channel. When you click on it it shows you a boost preamp you can turn on and off for the microphone channel. Have fun.

I use energyXT as my guitar effects box all the time. I've got shitloads of effects loaded into it, and a good deal of home made midi routing. I'm now at a point where when I step on the switches on my zoom pedal board, I select patch on my Marshall JMP-1 preamp as well as routing and settings on the effects in eXT. Lotsa fun.

not helpful to the question at hand, but once you got things hooked up properly a good guitar suite would be simulanalog with a few of the better stompbox-emulations
