Cubase SX 3.02 making weird unwanted stutter sound

Recently I opened up Cubase SX 3.02 and tried loading a wave file into an audio track. When I hit play I get this stutter sound. I also get the stutter when I hit stop.
My system specs are:
* Pentium 4, 3.4Mhz CPU
* ASUS P5AD2-E
* 2GB RAM
* Delta 1010
So far I've tried the following to fix it:
* Defragged all my hard drives.
* Under Processor Scheduling, chose 'Background Services'.
* Tried setting my ASIO buffer to 512k (just for testing purposes)
None of this worked. I just noticed this problem, and haven't had this problem with Cubase SX before. In other audio apps like FLStudio I won't get that stutter sound unless I try to load a VST while the audio is playing. I really don't want to switch from Cubase SX, as I really like it for recording my guitar and other audio, as well as MIDI.
Has anyone else out there experienced this or know a way around this?

Why don't you use the latest update (3.1)?

Went back to SX 2 and found that the stutter only happens when you hit stop.

I get that stutter in FLS when loading VSTs or new songs when audio is playing, it seems like a priority thing with M-Audio's ASIO drivers. Maybe SX's priority is set to normal or low in your startup song (I think it defaults to high). Actually, I haven't used SX in forever so I'm not even sure if the priority is a song by song setting.
If I use ASIO4All or the janky default asio driver the audio will just stop when I load a new song or VST, I absolutely cannot stand the stuttering noise. It's such a buzzkill and I'm pretty sure its unique to my M-Audio driver.

Yeah that really sucks. Last night I thought I had it pegged, because I heard a weird grinding noise comming from my Maxtor 300GB drive. I'm going to run some diagnostic software to see whats up, but.... its hard to trust the drive now.ProfessorCP wrote:I get that stutter in FLS when loading VSTs or new songs when audio is playing, it seems like a priority thing with M-Audio's ASIO drivers. As far as the M-Audio drivers go, yeah I switched drivers to the ASIO Multimedia driver and the stutter went away.... but then latency came on in....

If it wasn't happening before, and you haven't changed ANYTHING in your system, then it's probably a hardware problem (that drive is probably going).

Interesting. I have the same issue in Fruity Loops and a similar thing in Cubase SX 1. In Cubase I get it at random moments when I play or record. I have an Audiophile 192 by... yes... M-audio. I'm almost sure something in Windows is in conflict with ASIO driver.

Just got a new 300GB drive. Fixed it. When I hit play there is no stutter. When I hit stop, it just stops... no stutter. I think the other drive I had is just going out (slowly).

Have you reinstalled Windows on this drive or do you have another drive for the system?
