Almost groove-like (SIGHUP with drums)

Some tracks I've made recently, guaranteed not to hurt. Less noisedrone than my self-image usually permits, but what can you do, eh? Only sound source is drum samples. Both are live takes. Both make extensive use of comb filters for converting drums into something else.
First track was all done using Liveslice. (Damp 1, 8min, 11MB)
Second track was live drum sequencing using the drum contraption in Audiomulch. Might be more hippy sunshine than anyone is used to hearing from me - guess I was feeling a bit hippy sunshine. (Damp 2, 4 min, 5.3MB)
I'm pleased with them overall, but some of the delay might be a bit dodgy, especially on the second one. Since I didn't record what I was doing, it'd be too complicated to go back and start these all proper like.
Hope someone enjoys them.
Cheers,
Steve

Groovy!
The first held from start to finish.
The second reminds me of some Tibetan music that I heard at a local shop owned by, you guessed it, Tibetan people. What it was I don't know, as the guy working didn't know either.
In any case, well done.

1st one I'm listening too is brilliant.....love the expression you are getting with all the variation of tone/volume on the individual beats....getting itchy wanting to play some lead with this

Thanks guys.
The first one is my favourite of the two. I posted both because they're kind of flip sides of the same coin for me, the playing and technique involved was roughly the same for both.
Cheers,
Steve

Wow...
... Sighup & beats.
I enjoyed the first track more, too.
Actually I really, really like the first one;
it reflects yr great competence concerning progression and time,
soundwise it has real depth and variety...
the second one (to me) seems more like a sketch.
Nice work.
'Damp 1' goes to my 'favorites' mp3 folder.
Cheers,

Thanks a lot, tl.
The second one is sketchy, I mostly just started recording as I was playing around. I love the comb filter sounds in it though, they always sound like electrified glass to me. It's funny to me to think the drum samples taken from a cheap drum machine from the 80s can be made to sound like they're some kind of stringed instrument.
I work my way around to beats now and again, and especially working with the fantastic Liveslice a lot these days, I'll probably start doing a few more things with regular rhythms. But I have some other stuff that'll be released in a couple of weeks with nary a beat in it, I'll be back to my old noisedrone self for a little while at least.

Talkin' about you & beats:
What's yr part in Esau Radio Studio?
If it's yr project only, you can't be new to workin' with groove.
But to be honest I enjoy yr 'sighup' style work much more... To me it's more mature: You really know what you're doing.
(Yr lessons in drone on Kvr were excellent)
CombFilters:
Foolin' around with Mulch's contraptions only, I fell in love with them.
It's a strange, easy but great way to give percussive elements melody... or to completely convert percussion to melody.
An impulse, a short & thus tuned delayline: ...
(Although in general I'm a dsp dufus)
I can even hear the theoretical nearness to the whole phymod spectrum.
A drum can be a something like a string instrument and so on...
(OT) That's why I really love the shortly discovered models made by Xoxos.
Again:
Much respect for yr work...
it really expands my listening & working customs.
Cheers,

It's all me. No, I suppose I'm not new to beats and grooves, just don't get around to them much these days. I went through a period of a year or so where I barely even listened to anything with beats in it. I'm slowly coming back around to them, although in a different fashion.tl wrote:What's yr part in Esau Radio Studio?
I like my SIGHUP stuff more, too. It's what I've devoted most of my music time to in the past two years, and it is what comes most natural to me. I have things in mind for Esau Radio Studio, but haven't worked out how I want to approach them. The tracks on the site are fairly old, last one was done 2003 I think. They were all done with VAZ Modular, which I haven't used as a synth in a while. That's part of the reason I haven't written anything new for that project, I'm not sure what tools I'd like to use for it anymore.
Was listening to your 8pointer stuff earlier, really like 030622 and 031022. Made for a nice contrast to rachMiel's stuff that I was listening to (I must go post in his thread).
Really glad you liked the tracks.
Cheers,
Steve

Thanks.
Those definitely are just sketches...
Shit, but I never had enough push to...
Me: lazy ass...
Thanks for the tip.shamann wrote:Made for a nice contrast to rachMiel's stuff that I was listening to (I must go post in his thread).

thanks shamman, this quite a find.I checked out some others and particularly enjoy droneb, coma outcome, dirge in blue and clear, and drift.
Drones are all around us.I live very close to a motorway viaduct, and on the stillest of nights the sound of a lone car travelling it's length creates a sound that has so much in it.Impressive body of work you are collecting there. Thanks so much for sharing it.

Thanks. Glad to hear you liked the other tracks, too. I couldn't agree more about drones.
I'll be posting "Dirge in blue and clear" next week for everyone else to hear. So far you're one in only about six people who have heard it.

This is different - seem more like sketches than finished pieces really, but I can see this sort of approach being developed further.

I admit I was feeling a little 'publish or perish' but the first one feels complete to me. The second could do with something, but I couldn't think of what.dystonia_ek wrote:This is different - seem more like sketches than finished pieces really, but I can see this sort of approach being developed further.
I needed to do something a little different this time around. I had done three tracks in a row, that when listening to them afterward, all seemed the same. Fret not though, I have crateloads of my drone noise just waiting to be unleashed.
Thanks for checking it out.
Cheers,
Steve
