Host for mixed software/hardware?

My production setup is a mixed hardware/software setup.

Currently I use Cubase VST 5.something, came with my sound card(full version iwth teh EMU 1820). It does the job quite nicely, but I was wondering if there is any other sequencer that might be better suited for a hardware/software mix.

I'm mainly doing sound generation on the hardware synths, software is primarily for effects, though I have a few VSTi's I'm fond of, as well as Reason. But I'm pretty much pushing as much of the sound generation offboard as I can afford to(and have space for), ideally the computer will run sequencing and effects only(realisticaly though, I'll still be keeping a few VSTi's).

is there something which is bothering you about the way Cubasis VST handles outboard hardware, or do you just want to try something else?
