hi guys. i have the option of buying either, and i dont know which to get. has anyone got any experience with using both of them/>?

btw the 100m is cheap. very cheap compared to the 100(101) but i always thought the 100 had a 303 filter?

i cant find my n-z part of the analogue synth book either.

please no hard/soft flames, i dont know where else to post this.

and please dont just say the 100 is warmer compared to the 'clinical' 100m. ive heard/.

can anyone describe the sounds of them better? how much do they differ?

I think you could either use the 'modular synthesis' or the 'intruments'-forum'...

I'm not sure if anyone here has got a Doepfer system though...

Um, well, I have a Doepfer system. But that isn't really relevant, since we're talking about a Roland System 100 and 100m. The 100m is the modular synth. Thats the one you want. Or if you don't want it, tell me where it is and I'll buy it instead!

I have no clue - the Doepfer system is called 100/101 as well and there's a 'mini'-system so I thought Russel might have referred to this one when he wrote 'm'... - would have been clearer though if he wrote in his post what he's referring to...

The 100m is a fully modular synth, whereas the 100 is only semi-modular. Some info:

The system 100 could only lossely be described as "modular", comprising as it does of only five components. There is a synth, a mixer, a sequencer and expander module and *gasp* speakers. The synth and expander are virtually identical, though one has a keyboard and the other does not. Each of those houses a single oscillator, ADSR, lowpass and highpass filter and noise generator.

The System 100m, on the other hand was a true modular system, and you could expand it as desired. Coming later in the game, it sounds a bit more "refined" than the earlier System 100. Tehre were a good number of modules available for the thing, so you'll want to take a good look at what is onbaord the one available to you.

Both are nifty synths, though given the choice, I might opt for the System 100m, since you might be able to expand it a bit. Chris Carter of Throbbing Gristle and Carter/Tutti had one for ages (his "Small Moon" album is a great showcase of what a talented synthesist can do with a System 100), and it was also used by Human League on the early records. I believe Robert Fripp also had one.

The Roland modulars never had the biggest, baddest sound on the block, nor were they as esoteric as, say, a Serge. Nevertheless, they sounded good, were pretty stable and dependable if they were well maintained.

That is one thing to be aware of. Vintage modulars need looking after and it can get costly. Still, if you have a good one, nothing compares to a kick ass modular system.

i have read as much as i can take on these 2 babies, i really need the nitty gritty subtle differences between the 2..

i heard that the 100 has the same filter chip as the 303, whereas the 100m is a 24db type. then i read that the 100 has only a 12db filter.. so i am all confused

maybe i just blow all my money and buy both

i need a sequencer too

The Doepfer modular is actually called the A-100. There's no 101 system, though; the designation A-1xx (where xx is above 00) is used for single modules. There are actually three A-101 modules, the A-101-1, A101-2, and A101-3, all based on Vactrols...
