I mean, we all used to copy tapes and vinyl in the past right ?

The First 4 Internet software is included on a handful of CDs, including recent releases from My Morning Jacket and Southern rockers Van Zant. When the albums are put in a computer's CD drive, they ask a listener to click through a consent form, and then install the rootkit copy-protection software on the hard drive.

I was under the impression this was something that was going on behind our backs and with out or knowledge. Either way it isn't very ethical, but it seems to me that it wouldn't stop real time copying...just ripping.

I mean I have a digital out on my cd player and can recod direct into my pc or akai dps 12, I never have because until now there was not a reason, but could it still be transferred this way?

FWIW what I use ripping for is to make best of cds or to fix annoying things. Like for instance when a s ong has a long intro and they count it as another trak. When you use random/shuffle you get only the intro or the song. So I use my editor to put them together and add it to other songs I like.

I rarely play cd in my pc because this room also has a cd changer, a dvd player and my richo cd burner for my akai has audio outs (I can even use PS2), so I don't need to play cds in the computer...

Exactly. I buy more vinyl nowdays and record directly into my iRiver. There's nothing to stop people recording in real time - just like the good ole days with tape and minidisc.

Anyway, it seems to be a pretty shit thing to do and I hope Sony get their comeupance.

which at 46 I'm real use to realtime recording..what bothers me is that it's sony . When it comes to mid price stereo equioment I find Sony to be one of the more reliable...there are many others though. But take a company like Pioneer...I would never buy a component from them again. They use to be great, now they make garbage. Techniques only has turntables going for them, the rest of their line imo is not trustworthy at all...I don't want to buy B&O cause I can't afford it and I really do not care for Bose.

Yeah, but I still wouldn't buy from Sony. There are other choices...I have a CD player that's a few years old now, but still very good. It's a Marantz (who initially were a bit on the el cheapo side, but got into some quality HiFi components after a while).
Amps and the like...it's often worth searching around the specialist shops. It might be a bit different in the US, but when I was in the UK there was a great choice of smaller independent audiophile manufacturers (in fact, it probably is a bit different, as there is a legacy of Brit audio makers).

I got an Axiom amp - nice bit of kit, and it was only 300 quid or so. I remember at the time there was a Cambridge amp going for just 50 quid more - I can't remember now why I didn't buy it, cos now I think about it - would it have been the same Cambridge that makes the Cambridge Eq units? Now that would really piss me off.

Mind you - this was a few years ago....so it'd probably be the equivalent of maybe 400 quid or a bit more...take into account the exchange rate...$600 maybe? For an amp...

Hmmm.....yeah, maybe that is a bit more than "budget" - ignore me, I'm just talking out of my arse.

But anyway...you don't have to pay that much - there are certainly good CD players that aren't Sony and don't cost the earth.

actually imo Marantz has been one of the companies that have gone down in performance...they were not cheapies in the 70's at all...companies I still trust include Harmon Karden, Onkyo,,,I haven't checked out recent Yamaha, but they were good, Proton, I'm not sure about JVC...then I would go with big bux..(though Proton isn't cheap)...I'm not saying that Sony is the best mid priced, just the one I trust the most as far as reliability...I have a Sony reciever (7.1), cd changer, dvd, tivo, vcr and TV (vintage polk audio speakers) my cassette deck is pioneer, when they die I surely will look elsewhere...but that could be a while (I also have an entire pioneer system in the bedroom that was my sisters...pure crap, all of it)...
