Free 2 track audio editor Recommendation

Is there a free 2 track audio editor for PC that I can import sounds from CDs with a volume control on the import window and a volume control on the editing screen?
So basically I can control the volume when I preview tracks before I import them off of CD. And then once I have them imported and want to trim the samples I can control the volume from the editing screen as well?
My sound card has no volume control and it's going straight to my speakers
TIA

check out goldwave. MOstly free if you can ignore the nag screens. Quite configurable so i'm sure you could get the volume control if you wish.

turn down the volume knob on your speakers/amplifier

@thehumanPlugin: what sound card do you use? Maybe someone can help you with that, as it is unlikely that a card would have no option to control volume.

Just tried Audacity, it doesn't allow you to preview from a cd before importing.
I have an EgoSys Gigaport AG soundcard
thanks

You might want to check out Nero 7 Ultra. There's a fully-functional 30-day demo, downloadable at www.nero.com.
I'm not entirely sure what you mean about the previewing, but Nero has both a multi-track recorder that will load files, as well as a wave editor. Both of them have volume knobs all over the place. You can certainly analyze the files and change them before committing to a burn.
If you shop carefully, you can find it for less than $40 in several places. It's about $25 after some perhaps-dodgy rebates at www.buy.com. The current wisdom is that you DON'T want to install the buggy boxed software, just use the key you get with the box and authorize the downloaded demo.
Depending on how your head works, you can think of it as buying a really powerful burning program, with the other functionality thrown in for free...
Take care,
GreyLion
