Hi...

I am currently using the old TC Works - Native Bundle (discontinued since a few years) as a compressor for single channels in Live 5.
I am looking for a new compressor with a little more sting and power, preferably a cpu efficient one.

Would it be wise to check out Sonalksis´compressors?

Man, that TC Compressor is a fine, fine compressor and pretty damn CPU efficient too. I think it's still the best all-around compressor. That being said...

Check out: CamelPhat 3, Voxengo Marquis and OtiumFX Compadre, all excellent, edgy compressors. OtiumFX isn't the best in CPU efficiency, but offers amazing control. Also check out the BuzComp Series.

It would probably be wise to check out Sonalksis, I don't like the UI's on those but people flip over them.

is it just me, or what?

what the hell does "edgy" "sting" and "power" mean in referance to a compressor?

i've seen edgy objects, like a rhombic triacontahedron. i've been stung, a sting in the ass, and all other various places you often recieve one.
power is something a bit subjective in of itself though, i'm not sure if i could say i've really seen power, since it is quite an abstract idea.

i fail to understand how these words apply to a compressor.

PSP VintageWarmer is a cpuefficient and a very nice sounding compressor!

I recommend checking out the Kjaehus Golden Compressor - a very fine one, very CPU friendly, and not too expensive all told:

anything i've ever used which had the word 'vintage' in its name was really bad sound wise, it only makes one sound and by the time you get to the low note you wanted, its nap time anyway.

UAD's La2a, Urei, Fairchild... :)

Aciddose - you wake up on the wrong side of the bed today?? I agree it's hard to fulfill terms like that, but I assume this gentleman is looking for something with a bit of drive. We have to deal with abstract terms like "punch" and "weight" all the time. Best you can do is guess...I guess.

Oh no,

that's not just you. Everything I understood was that linzatti wants a new compressor with lo CPU usage.

Best wishes, Fritz
In the end will be the word.

Sorry,

I didn't answer your question linzatti: Voxengo Marquis. This thing has so many faces that it takes some time to learn to use all the possibilities it has. Great tone. Check it out is my suggestion.

i decided to make a bit of a joke today instead of being the usual arsel hatt.

you probably dont want my favorate type of compressor, which is a very fast acting, nice clicking, a bit distorting compressor, like the one i wrote. i actually have not tried many compressors, but i have tried that vintagewarmer one, which i think you also dont want. it sounds very muddy, i think it is just a pretty average compressor with some distortion applied or something.

i cant tell you what you do want, sorry, but atleast i can guess what you dont want :)

if you do want a kind of 'gritty', very basic and fast acting compressor, like i said, i made one, although you probably ment to ask for 'smooth, low distortion, general purpose', which i'd agree with the others except vintagewarmer for. i think vintagewarmer is just intended to be a distortion honestly :/

Which one did you make?

that xhip compressor one, http://xhip.cjb.net (in the xhipeffects pack)

For native compressors, I find that the GCO-1 and the Voxengo Marquis are fantastic. On my Dual Core Intel they actually both take the same CPU usage but to be honest, their CPU usage is relatively high. Both sound fantastic though, the Marquis sounds extremely amalog and colours the sound in the best way I've ever heard, the GCO to me can add some distortion or work as a really smooth compressor. I still use both very much.

That said, the TC works stuff is also extremely top notch and many still use those plugins regardless of the fact that they are no longer supported, the GUI is fantastic, they sound amazing and if they still existed, I probably would have purchased them :(

For low CPU usage, I hear the TrackPlug by WaveArts is good, but I personally dislike it's sound.

Cheers
