Hi there. Anyone using an AMD 64 X2 (Dual Core) setup having any problems with audio software? I have heard allot about problems with dual core and Cubase 3 in different forums, but I never know if they are just newbie audio guys and well.... just like to complain for the sake of complaining. Let me know what programs smoke and what programs suck.

I am about to buy an AMD dual core and the programs I prefer are...

Cubase 3
Nuendo 3
Live 4 or 5
Wavelab 5
Acid 5
Vegas 6

...Any problems with these?

Just started using mine with Live & Reason - so far everything appears to work perfectly.

The big question here is - what motherboard are you planning to use? The dual-core is an awesome CPU...as long as the board it is installed in get along with the rest of the system.

I am taking delivery on my first AMD chip (the X2 4400+) this Thursday and after much study and comparsion - I am choosing the ASUS A8V Deluxe as my board.

I'm building a new system with an AMD dually and hear lots a great things about them from our tech guys. Anyhow, I'm wondering why you use so many DAWs? Why not concentrate on one? Like Nuendo. Why bother with Cubase? Personally, I'm using Live 5 for almost everything these days. The more simple my setup, the easier it is to produce.

WOW! I chose the same board and proc! Did you buy it from Newegg?

Got my parts locally here in Calgary. Pretty excited about the potential for this combo. I use Nuendo exclusively and judging by the gang that endorses this combo over the Nuendo forums...it should be killer!

There are, however, some initial got-ya's as far as updating the BIOS etc before the fun and games begin. Yours (and probably mine too) will arrive with a BIOS that may not recognize the dual-core right off the bat. You gotta get this board up to BIOS 1014 or higher to really get full benefit.

Also - if you plan to use a SATA drive for the OS...there is a bit of work to do there too...like ensuring you have the VIA Raid drivers handy during setup....

I have a msi neo-2 paltinum board, had probs setting things up, as has been said the bios needs updating to recognise the chip.
Mine didn't like the dual core chip in combination with a raid0 array.

I have a dual core and run fruity loops and live 5. However I actually regret buying a dual core now as nether of these hosts support dual core systems at the moment and it doesn't seem like there going to for a long time. They both run but I am only getting a single cores prefromance of 2200mhz instead of 4400mhz. I would recommend then a fx55 (I think thats what there called) or a P4.

As far as I know cubase does support dual core but I don't actually know, also there's the sonar 64 version which I assume supports both cores but again im not sure.

Though some ppl say KT890 runs ok. Hope it really does!

Me as one, am looking also for one, as SX3.1 supports dualcore/multicore!

Which nForce4 are ya talking about? And - does it have a 8xAGP port for my Matrox P750 plus 5 "old school" PCI slots for my UAD-1 cards etc etc....

That's the real reason for the popularity of this board....it's one of last to offer these retro slots...plus harnesses the power of the dual-core. Most Nuendo folks can't be bothered with SLI..gamer video boards...PCI-e, PCI-X or any chipset problems that induces any kind of popping, clicking or other issues...

The GigaByte ULTRA 939 was a great board with the nForce3 ultra chipset but it's a rare bird now....

And yes - I hear ya on VIA - I use to be a VIA hater years ago - but apparently they took all our bitching to heart and apparently made a chipset that really is solid. I will let ya know if this all goes to hell in a hand basket by like Friday or Saturday...I honestly don't know what to expect...I hope it all works out.

But:
Your info on VIA is dated and debunked. The KT800 chipset is a good one. Unfortunately Asus A8V is EOL. What's sold now is what's in stock.
Nforce4 and KT890 both have PCI/PCIe bridge issues that have a slight impact on audio performance, but should be fine with a dual-core in either case...

There are a bunch of threads on motherboards as of late, do a quick scan of the hardware forum.

Cubase SX runs very well with dual-core. Dual-dual core even.

The Cubase dual core issue should have been resolved in their latest update and I think it was a dual-processor issue and not a dual core one.

Im using an AMD 4400+ X2 with an MSI K8N NEO4 Platinum Motherboard,EMU 1820M & with Cubase SL3.1.0 and Reason 3.04 with no problems whatsoever.
Its excellent, halves the CPU usage in Cubase, when compared to my old AMD 4000+ San Diego processor!

Still watching from the sidelines myself before I order a dual core setup. VIA chipsets still seem to be a bit slower than NForce3 in perfromance from benchmarks I've flipped through, but not earth shattering slower.
