I'm still using CWPA 9.03 which will not use VSTi's which makes SFZ a no go.

Anyone know of a SoundFont player that is a VST only.

how can you have a soundfont player that is VST but not VSTi? The i just means it's an instrument.

I think you need to explain how you want to use a soundfont player (== instrument) as an effect (== VST not VSTi).

Cakewalk 9 will not use VSTi's but will use VSTs. I want to use some drum samples via SoundFonts to improve my midi drum tracks. Think I just answered my own question that this is not possible.

Maybe time to upgrade to Sonar.

ned911: I have heard that PA9 will work in XP. Now cake does not support this but if you were to pick up P5-2 it records audio now. It has a sample player and quite a few useful synths as well. You could be using it as you go to app. If your funds are low and your budget is to tight to get a new box and P5 you are stuck I think with just a recording app. I did move from PA9 TO Sonar and being able to use softsynths was the ticket. Even HS is better that PA9 because you can use the tools to sequence fonts and synths. And when you consider what hardware costs you are saving money going this way.

Aren't there some free (or very inexpensive) VST(i) hosts that can be synched to CWPA9 via something like Midi Yoke?

I haven't done this myself, but it seems very do-able when you think about it.

Or, take Larry's advice and upgrade.

"Synched" tenuously as all that happens is the MIDI data goes to the target (as if it were an external, MIDI-connected device). The audio then goes wherever (not back where the MIDI came from). So yes, you could use a MIDI sequencer to control a VSTi hosted in a mini-host (either generic or specific to the softsynth) using something like MIDI Yoke.

Not sure it's what the original poster was after, though, as I'm guessing they wanted to process (or at least mixdown) the resulting audio.

(I'd hope someone who can race 911s has enough spare cash for something like Sonar HS at least...)

You can use energyXT as a VST and then use a VSTi SF player inside of it. The only problem is that I'm not sure if it will sync to the host properly or not.

Or Sonar-5 Yes I know it's pricy but when you take into consideration what comes in the deal you end up with everything and them some. And with producer you have in house just about everthing needed. I can't think of one thing left out now. SFZ font player, pitch correction, really great effects, looping tools and then some. You can record audio, midi and as if that was not enough automation that goes on for ever. I started at P8 and now with all that's in the box nothing is needed but this app. V-analog Pentagon and the TTS-1 are just enough to get your ideas down. It's silly but it is all in the box now but your main instrument. And that records in EASY. But even if you can't make the deal HStudio could get you up and running so fast.

Do have to make trade offs as Sonar 5PE upgrade costs as much as 3 tires for the 911 (it's an old car).

My immediate need is to get a demo done for my cover band. I can offset some of the studio costs with a upgrade and do it myself but having trouble getting good drum sounds to disc due to our rehearsal space. We used triggers to get midi data now I just need to get the GM sounds out and replaced with good samples.

WilliamK - Sonar 4 or Sonar HS 4?

Not to jack the thread, this could help maybe. Does the Sonar Home Studio support high sample rates like 24/96 as an example. If it does that might be a good option as a side program for making beats, and possibly be good enough to upgrade for recording. Not sure if it's my thing, but the upgrade price is ok. If the sample rates are high I'll buy it to give it a full tryout.

Back in the mists of time, when I was making music with PA9, I used the soundfont's original home-the SBlive. I'm sure you can get one of those real cheap these days (or an audigy) and the upside is that it's all hardware, so no CPU load. Of course it would have to play nice with whatever soundcard you've got now. This was a fairly common setup five or six years ago: a "real" soundcard for recording, and an SBlive for the free soundfonts. Good luck!

Loading Soundfonts into an Soundfont capable soundcard. Yeah, that's actually a very cool solution. I think you can pick these cards up for about $20-30 USD.

The other thing I was thinking, though not as elegant, is just editing the samples into an audio track. This really depends on the audio editing capabilities with Cakewalk 9. This sort of thing is very easy to do in an app like Ableton Live but I'm not sure about Cakewalk's capabilities.

Just ordered a new motherboard and CPU (needed to upgrade the old 1.2 gHz anyway). My current system is a Shuttle which only has 1 PCI slot with houses my Delta66. Will throw together a new system and include a Soundblaster live! card along with my Delta. Can then run the digital out of the SBLive to the digital in of the 66 and we are in SF heaven.
