Um, yeah. Can someone tell me what's the advantage of using automation clips instead of drawing the events into the event editor? The only reason I've come upon is that using automation clips might be somewhat clearer visually.

I haven't got an answer from the manual either, so don't tell me to RTFM :) It just seems that I can do everything that automation clips enable in event editor too.

Please correct me, I hope I'm wrong and there indeed are some really useful features which I have missed!

They can both do the same things. I prefer the automation clips because they are more precise and easier to use.

More precise, in what way? Vertically they for sure aren't, right?

They are just as accurate 'vertically' (you might want to zoom in). I find them much easier to create and change the exact curve that I want. Rather than having to draw events with a mouse, you let the computer calculate the curves and just give the endpoints.

Hmm, by zooming in, I just get about 1/4 of the screen height, since the zoom percentage is limited. In event editor I get to zoom as much as I want...

To get more precise resolution, you can also change the min and max controls for that clip (on the step sequencer). Or just keep on using the event editor.

in the upper right corner of the playlist is a square box, when you hover your mouse over that it will turn to arrows. That box is the zoom box, instead of the limited choices in the view menu you can really zoom in and be quite accurate and precise...;)

btw that box is also in the paino roll and event editor...:)
The highest form of knowledge is empathy, for it requires us to suspend our egos and live in another's world. It requires profound, purpose‐larger‐than‐the‐self kind of understanding.

Yeah, that's just the box I was using to zoom and the maximum vertical zoom I get is much less than in event editor! You can only zoom the audio/automation clip -window to like 10x of the minimum.

Aukikco, you really want your parameter to be 75.654652% at time x?

Well not really, it's not that important, good point :)

My main point of interest was whether either of the methods has certain advantages :)

i think you answered your own question then, in the original post. automation clips just make it a lot easier to see what all you've got going on in the playlist.

I like automation clips for audio but when it comes to VST parameters it's shit for me because:
1)break-points are always getting shifted if you stretch or compress another point and,
2) it's hard to tell if all your breakpoints and notes match up (I mean how are you to tell when your pattern is just a grey bar?).

Now, automation clips in Tracktion... yes, those are great and how they should be. If in FLS... if automation clips were allowed to be placed 'inside' the piano roll, well... I'd pee myself.

One of the Advantages of using Automation clips is that you can assign any parameter to only one clip Channel(e.g. Volume fade ins and fade outs of different Channels) with differnt mapping Formulas instead of drawing an entire graph in event editor for one by one (of course if those parameteres has similar automation curves). This is really time saving feature.

Another advantage in my opinion is that you have more control over your project during playback via graphical envelopes (specially for audio tracks) in playlist view. You can easily find any mistake and correct them.

SDV - if you want to see the waveform, just check/uncheck (can't remember which it is) "keep on disk" in the channel settings. then you can match up the audio with the automation.

edit: nevermind, i just realized you're probably talking about a pattern in the top of the playlist, not an audio clip. sorry about that.
