Ok i've ripped some songs from a CD (it's store bought, not pirated). I ripped them to wav and want to use them as a reference for mixing. My question is what wav player (e.g. winamp, wmp, etc.) would accurately play the wav format song back at 0 dB. I ask because the songs sound a lot louder in my ear's than it does on the mixer panel (FL mixer in this case).

Try an audio editor. Audacity is free, but there are also lots of commercial options.

Hmm I loaded it as an audio clip in FL seems it was playing at 0 db. Anyways thanks for the tip I have audacity around here somewhere.

You should be able to do it in FL, too. An audio editor will just make it very easy, less fiddling about.

Just stay clear from Windows Media Player (or know how to set its options so it doesn't touch it!)

Far as I know, Winamp will play the wave file at its proper level, just make sure the volume is up in the Windows mixer.

Does just playing a wav in media player alter the file somehow?

Depending on its settings: yes it might very well!
On the View menu, point to Enhancements. You'll have automatic volume levelling (in other words: a limiter), graphical 10-band EQ, a "silent mode" (must be an expander, which is another dynamics effect) and TrueBass, SRS + WOW effects. In v10 there should be even more crap...
