wondering about a couple sounds from some 80s albums.

when chick corea did his elektric band, he was into fm synths... or at least a dx7. any idea what the solo sound is in this one? is there a patch for ni fm7 that could do it? there are some rhodes sounds in the stock presets but nothing that has that harsh, noisy sound.

also, i'm wondering if anyone knows what this synth was that adam holzman or whoever played with miles davis in the 80s and what vsti could come close to it. i have virtually no knowledge of old synths (or current ones).

thank you.

Chick also used a Minimoog on occasion, but I'm betting the sound in question's a DX7 with the operator feedback turned up.

Alan was also a DX7 user- sounds to me like a DX with a breath controller.

FM7 wont come close to making the same sounds. the dx-7 should be cheap in japan and most of europe right now, although they are getting expensive ($400-$600) in the usa.

you should look into getting a real dx-7, they play way better than any other keyboard i've ever used (the synth action keyboard is probably the single best implementation ever) with the only bad thing being that it doesnt output velocity greater than 100, and the velocity shape isnt very good for controlling most other instruments.

if you're only after the sounds, get one of the rack modules, they are usually very cheap at about $150.

about the use of the dx-7 in those examples, that is not a solo dx-7, i think i can hear maybe a layer of three?

most of those sounds you'll find in the various banks you can get online. personally i'd just patch them myself but for most people that is a bit impossible :)

Wrong. Turn down the bit rate using the digital slider and FM7 can get just as grungy as a DX was.

I agree. I've heard the FM7 be VERY DX7ish in the right hands

DX-7 was my first synth...;)

I've been programming FM synths for almost twenty years- I don't have any problems getting FM7 to sound exactly like a DX :?

no I sold it because I needed something mutti-timbral..I sold it to a producer friend in New York so I got a good price for it...I miss it, but I don't if yah know what I mean...I did have the original instructional cassette tapes that came with it. But those went too, I also had an expression pedal and spare cards and a sweet road case...recently I came across a picture of it but god knows where it is now...

the original dx-7 sounds beautiful and pure, not gritty. fm-7 sounds gritty no matter what you do with it.

the dx-7 can make harsh tones, but they always sound smooth.

btw, my dx is for hire (well, actually its for whore, free), just send me a solo midi sequence and i'll get you the high quality mp3, 48k mono vbr mp3 only!

fm7 sounds really bad on the epiano patch, and totally shits itself trying the brass patch.

xhip is closer to a minimoog than fm7 is to a dx-7, seriously. and that isnt even xhip's purpose, so, it makes fm7 look pretty bad.

yeah, who knows. this is what he used on that album: Yamaha KX88/TX816'S, Synclavier, Linn 9000, Fairlight, midi Rhodes/TX816'S, mini moog, Yamaha GS1, DX7/TX816'S, gong

sounds fine to me. mind if i put it in a song i'm working on?
all my favorate patches sound bad on fm7.
maybe it's time for some new favorite patches
?

the fm7 has a few rhodes-like presets. maybe i'll mess around with them for starters tonight.

Can you post some A/B comparisons of FM-7 and DX-7 so the rest of us can see what you mean?

well, to notice you have to compare the two instruments directly. the real dx-7 sounds so much smoother, and the fm-7 made me want to never use it again, and i never have. if you use any real dx-7 patches in your stuff, send me the dx-7 patch and the midi data (.mid) with all the stuff in channel 1. program changes work but you'll have to send me the original dx-7 bank. i'll send you the mp3 of the output direct from the dx-7, and i'm sure you'll hear the difference from fm7.

as for those demo things i played just now, do you really want to make your music sound that bad? :D go ahead and use any of that stuff if you want..

you said "it sounds ok to me", it was my dx-7, not fm7.

as for fm7 comparisons for anyone else, same instructions, get me the patch/bank and midi and i'll get you the mp3. i dont own fm7 and i'm not going to 'borrow' it for such a purpose. unless the version i tried a couple years ago is different than the release version, i'll never be trying it again.
