can anyone recommend good active online forums *dedicated* to experimental/avant electronic music?

no disrespect intended for kvr. i love kvr and will continue to spend lots of time here. but in my experience the experimental wing of a general music forum (like kvr) tends to be a bit marginalized, pretty much by definition, since such a small minority of general listeners/composers are passionate about experimental music.

thanks.

I've never come across any music forum as active as KVR, although this place does tend less toward talking about experimental music at any length. So if you find an active one where the folk are tolerable, be sure to let us know.

Here are a few I look at from time to time:
Weirdsounds
Some of the areas on the Auditorium - but many of the people there are the people here.
iheartnoise - more harsh noise oriented, tends to be in-crowdish, also tends to be funny, but not so informative.
Sequenza 21 - less electronics, more "new" music

There are also several people at EM411 with fairly broad tastes, but most of the forum activity seems oriented towards gear or glitch-style with beats.

Cheers,
Steve

Again, no disrespect to KVR :D However, i'm into experimental music too, and i'm willing to open a forum. If there are people interested drop me a PM or something and i will work it out.

The Auditorium is a good forum for experimental stuff, if only more people would join to contribute.

I also recommend Infinite Sector - yo way experimental collective. I'm a proud member although I haven't participated for a bit coz I've been working on my secret project(s). Also EM411 has some outstanding experimental musicians.

> what's "experimental" music?

i'm choosing to answer this seriously ... because there was no ironic ;-) (or similar) appended to the question.

and it's a great question! cage objected to the term "experimental" for music because, he said, the experimenting goes on before the composition is finished, therefore the piece itself is not an experiment.

but i don't have any problem with calling music experimental ... unless that consigns it to the dark and dingy basement of the music world. for me "experimental" reflects an attitude toward music making (performing, composing, producing, listening) in which the creator/listener is constantly exploring new territory, moving forward, looking beyond boundaries. and this is why it's the most exciting music possible for me, because it's at the absolute front edge of the wave of musical discovery.

andrew, thanks for the support. :-) in fact, i am trying to start something in cahoots with Grooves magazine (which is now 100% online).

so please help me: do people read/respect Grooves? i'd like to know its reputation in the world of real, passionate musicians (like the ones who inhabit kvr).

amphetax,

what do you have in mind?

my concern about creating an experimental music forum "on my own" would be that no one would come. there are plenty of sad ghost forums on the web with just a handful of postings on them.

what we need, i think, is an *active* experimental music forum, one that would get lots of intelligent, heartfelt postings from passionate musicians (composers and listeners). a kvr for experimental.

Well, the thing is... we'll make it ACTIVE.

Maybe there could be another KvR section added that is specific to experimental music styles. Everyone has said that KvR tends to be a little more normalish in the music posted here (even if it is ambient or another genre that isn't so well known in the public eye) so lets change that perhaps???

I've never heard of Groove Rach, sorry can't help there. However, I know of you from a Computer Music issue a few years ago when they did a Reaktor 3 feature ;)
