what's the best host for real-time jams (vs. composition)?

Audio Plugin Hosts and other audio software applications discussion

I'm consulting with a team of guys developing a real-time interactive multimedia project - more along the lines of real-time audience show control - and we're trying to find the best vst/dx/sequencer/sample-player app.

I'm already a long-time Samplitude, Acid, and former Logic/Cubase user, so I've eliminated these as being too much overkill for this app.

Ableton Live MIGHT be a strong contender, but it seems somehow too 'linear', but I am still investigating.

Other contenders include:
Reaktor
Magix Music Studio (believe it or not)

We do NOT need a good audio recording app, just mostly sequencer/sample playback with vst/dx plugin features

I'm new to this forum, and still researching all the various threads.

Any other recommendations?

Thanks,

Greg

I was gonna suggest ableton live. Definitely a good realtime app.

You seriously need to take a harder look at Live 5. Session View is EXACTLY what you're looking for. Calling Live linear just screams, " I haven't really looked at Live much", take a harder look.

audiomulch is absolutely great for live uses, but it has no conventional midi-sequencing capabilities - but it's anything but linear and even if it doesn't fit your bill, be sure to check it out, if only for curiousity's sake. ;)

energyxt could work for your purposes, its also a fairly robust modular routing environment.

check it out here: http://xt-hq.com/

live is probably better if you can fit it on the budget

Thanks folks,

Like I said in the post, I'm still investigating Live some more. Yes, the session view is approaching what I'm looking for - very interesting indeed.

Multi-track MIDI routing (other MIDI apps. running in parallel) and clock sync (to audio/SMPTE/MIDI/show control) would be a plus, but can be done 3rd party.

Thanks,

Greg
Don't ask me, I just play here.

If you have a midi controller, go for Live. You can assign pretty almost any program function to an external controller. So it allows for easily creating, stopping and playing loops on the fly.

I don't know anyhting about MIDI sync stuff, but there is an option for SMPT timecode and MIDI clock sync in the MIDI/Sync tab of the preferences menu.

Audio Mulch (for live jamming environment and ease of use) hosting Energy XT (for sequencing). Cost you next to nothing too.

I'll second that. EnergyXT works great in Mulch.

mulch also supports network sync.

Cakewalk Project5 2.0 is very similar to live also, so you might want to check that out.

I kinda thought Live had this category sewn up?

Yep.

Live and Project 5 have a somewhat similar feel in that regard, but I found Project 5 to be a smidge easier to get into overall. Nothing against Live though, as I feel very comfortable with either.

ableton live......too buggy....
maybe using fl studio in LIVE MODE...
Who is this doing this synthetic type of alpha beta psychedelic funkin'?

Never had any real problems with Live, stable as anything else out there, in fact more so IMO.
