Sharing Firewire Drive between two PC's

I have an external encolsure which houses two hardrive bays with removable trays. Is it safe to hook this up to both my pc's at the same time? I wish to load all my sample libraries for both machines to access. Some of these inchlude vsti libraries like Atmospheres and Stylus.

The reason I am skeptical is because a friend of mine fried his dell motherboard by trying to share a firewire drive between his G4 and PC. I'm not sure how this happend, maybe he plugged the drive into the machines while everything was powered up?
